During the early years 1940-1942 what was the most likely sea route
taken by ships >from Lisbon to the Americas??

Did they go to the South Atlantic to avoid German U-boats?

Locating death certificate in New Jersey #general

Patricia Futoran

My husband's great grandmother Rose (BENDERSKY/BUNDERSKY) FUTORANSKY
died August 30 1895 in Jersey City,Hudson County, New Jersey, they
were living there and located on the 1895 census. She is buried in
Washington Cemetery NY and I have a photograph of her stone >from
Jewishdata..however the cemetery has no record of this burial. I am
trying to see if her patent's names are on the certificate to further
my research in the Ukraine. If I know where to obtain this record or
if anyone can locate it for me I will be happy to reimburse them for
their time

Private document translation - German #general

Sharon Gill

My great aunt, who was Czech, married a non-jewish Austrian.
Her husband died in 1936.

In 1938 she registered to comply with the Verordnung über die
Anmeldung des Vermögens von Juden. I have the file but really
need to ask if anyone can translate the hand written parts -
8 or 9 lines

I would prefer this document not to be published via Viewmate
as I do not know what is written and feel it may be quite
personal. Could anybody please help? I have the document
scanned ready to send

Please contact me on sharon_gill@btinternet.com if you can assist

Many thanks in advance

Looking for LYONSON family from Leeds #general

Shoshana Kahan

I've found among family photos members of a family named LYONSON who
are somehow related to my husband's family. Since his original family
name was GUREVITCH, I'm assuming that the "lion's-son" family were
also Gurevitches, but I don't know how closely they were related. In
the early 20th century (or mid-20th?) the family was living in Leeds.
In the UK census records I do find a Lyonson family in the area,
though their names don't match the 1 I have. Are there any descendants
of this family out there who might have some ancestry information to
share?

Thanks,
Shoshana Kahan

Records from Letichev and Uezd: Snitkov, Derazhnia, Medzhybizh, Zinkov, Mikhalpol, Volkovintsy, Butsnevtsy #ukraine

Renée K. Carl

Hello all

I'm announcing a fundraising campaign to support the translation of
records >from Letichev and Uezd, including Snitkov, Derazhnia,
Medzhybizh, Zinkov, Mikhalpol, Volkovintsy, Butsnevtsy.

Yes, you read that right - documents for Letichev and the towns of
Snitkov, Derazhnia, Medzhybizh, Zinkov, Mikhalpol, Volkovintsy,
Butsnevtsy!

Since the 2003 fire at the Kamyanets-Podilsky Archives, researchers
with ancestors >from towns in the region have wondered if they might
ever access or work with data relating to their relatives. This
opportunity to translate and make the dataset and documents originally
from the Kamyanets-Podilsky Archives available for study is truly
exciting news, and we need your donations to make it a success.

This project will translate and index 1221 images of records from
towns of Lectichev and its uezd, including Snitkov, Derazhnia,
Medzhybizh, Zinkov, Mikhalpol, Volkovintsy, Butsnevtsy. These images
are >from the 1829 and 1833 lists of families for conscription

Donate to the project here:
http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/v_projectslist.asp?project_cat=22
look for the line that reads "Document Translation and Indexing
Project for Letichev and Uezd."

Throughout the course of the project, completed spreadsheets will be
made available to donors who contribute $100 or more. At the same
time, translations of records might also be posted on relevant
KehilaLink webpages.

We have a translator ready to start, so I hope you will join me in
funding this important work.

This article, which appeared in the New York Times travel section last
month, is retired Times reporter Joseph Berger's account of his journey
with his sister "to the childhood homes of their parents, places where
once Jews like them could thrive." Berger's moving travelogue includes
a lengthy description of his father's Galician hometown (now Borynya,
Ukraine) and of his stops at nearby Turka and two other Galician towns,
