Re: names ending in "in" #belarus

What I said about the difference between -ov and -in concerned surnames
only. In geographic names the endings -ov, -ovo,- ova, -in,
-ina etc. have nothing common with their function in surnames. These
two cases are not to be mixed or confused.
Koidanovo and Koidanova are dialectal variants of the same town, where
Koidanovo sounds Russian while Koidanova is more like Belorussian
(White Russian).

This is interesting because I have wondered about all the variations of my

the town of Koidanov is located. And I have seen the town called Kaiden
(not to be confused with Keidan which is a completely different town in a
distant area. My father called the town Kurdanov which I never saw anyone
else use. I have been told that although the town has long been renamed
Dzerzhinsk (Dyarzhinsk or something like in it White Russian) the railroad
station still says Koidanov.

"-In" Suffix in Surnames #belarus

irwin@...

I agree with Raffi Lipkin - these are genitives usually built off the
mother's name - matronymics, in other words.
So the "n" at the end is a suffix that implies possession.

I don't agree about "kin" coming >from German "kind." The "k" is a
diminutive attached to the mother's name itself. So "-kin" in these
cases is a stacking of two suffixes on top of each other. I believe it
goes like this:

The "n" suffix can stand alone:

So Rochel's child is Rochlin or Rachlin.
And Rivkeh's child is "Rivkin".

Then other times that you see a "k" it's >from a diminutive in the
mother's name.

Little Soreh is Sorkeh. Her child is Sorkin or Serkin (using possible
American spellings.)
Little Chaneh is Hankeh. Her child is Hankin.
Little Dvoreh is Dvorke. Her child is Dworkin.
Little Chayah is Chayke. Her child is Chaikin.

But it also works with the Yiddish "l" diminutive.

So another way to say Little Soreh is Soreleh, which makes her child
Serlin.
Another way to say Little Riva is Riveleh, which makes her child Rivlin.

So these are true Yiddish genetives, parallel to the Slavic "ova" and
"ovich" constructions.

Dear All

Photographs of Helene NIRENSTEIN were found in London.
There is an acute above the second e in her first name.
Dated July and August, 1927, the address on the reverse of
one was Rue de la Provence 66, Antwerp. The name of
Joseph is above the address written in pencil. Perhaps
Helene's husband or her maiden name.

The person who kept the photos came >from Kutno near
Poland. Letters in French were translated for her up until
the 1970's. Sadly they cannot be found.

Any suggestions to find who Helene was would be appreciated.
