Re: photographing 1920 Polish passport #general

"...The passport is too fragile to be copied or scanned, and some of the
words are missing or deteriorated..."

Tamar,
Fortunately, the passport is not too fragile to look at.
;-)
So, "look at it" with a camera. Some (not all!) scanners may indeed add to
deterioration of the inks, but copying with a camera is quite safe. Assuming
you use a digital camera, put the passport by the window and photograph each
page separately. Since the pages are small, the camera must be used in the
macro mode to fill the frame. Digital cameras have a flower icon, which
designates photographing in macro mode - something that could be done by
film cameras only with extension rings or special lenses. When photographing
without a tripod, set the ASA to 400 and take three, five, ten duplicates of
each page. One of them will be sharp. It is not that hard.

And then the fun part will commence: the translation and the discovery.

Good luck!

My great-grandmother >from Ushpol, Lithuania stated her husband was born
in Dvinsk, Latvia around 1880. They were married in Dvinsk, and their
children were born in Dvinsk 1900, 1908 and 1912.

Question 1, where would their records be located? Her husband died
sometime after 1912. Her last place of residence before emigrating to
the US in 1922 was Rokiskis,Lithuania.

Question 2, This was before WW1, what wars were going on around that
time? Are there military records available?

I am researching: STEIMAN, STEINMAN, >from Lithuania; SKLADEROVICH
(SKLEIDEROVICH) >from Ushpol (Uzpaliail) and Wilkimer (Ukmerge) and
NADEL >from Zloczow (Zolochev) Poland now Ukraine.

Thank you,

Recipients of the Polish Cross of Merit #poland

Alex Guri

Dear Genners,

Does anyone know where I could find lists of recipients of the Polish
Cross of Merit

The Cross of Merit (Polish: Krzyz Zaslugi) is a Polish civil state
award established on June 23, 1923, to recognize services to the state.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross_of_Merit_(Poland)

My late grandmother's sister received this merit and I'm hoping such a
list will contain some details on her whereabouts and circumstances
during the war (for which the merit was given to her).
