My grandmother's maiden name was STEIN. Her mother's maiden name

Where is your grandmother from? I found in Meorei Galizia the
following: Yakov Yitzchak b. Yosef Yehoshua (son in law of A.D.) who
married Sara bat Yosef Yoske GUTTESMAN s.i.l. of R. Meir of Przeymsyl.
The text is unclear but one of them is a grandson of Meshulam Feivush
HELLER of Zbariz (not Zborow?).

My guess is that it is Yaakov Yitzchak himself, since he was AB"D in
Zbariz, and Wunder writes "He (who?) replaced his grandfather M.F.
HELLER as AB"D in Zbariz".

By the way... My ancestors have a very interesting naming pattern that
clearly shows they were either very devout chassidim or related to
A.D.: Levi Itzchak EIGEN (A.D's rabbi was Levi Itzchak of Berditchev)
had a son Avraham David who had a son Asher Anshil (A.D.'s father's
name)

Wilno is the Polish name; it's Vilna in Russian and Yiddish, and Vilnius
in Lithuanian. It's certainly not a "Jewish village": it's a large city,
the capital of Lithuania. It had large populations of Jews, Poles and
Lithuanians.

(Did the
towns have mixed ethnicities, or did Jewish and non-Jewish live
separately?) I have some names and places and would appreciate any
advice I'd like to know if the names might be Jewish. Names are as
follows: Stanley SIENKIEWICZ; Josie LIWRECOMA(corva?); Joseph
Sienkiewicz; Vincent SYSKA; Sofia of Sophie Syska; Katharine KIOZIOT;
ZEMAN ( >from Szymanski, Szymansky?) Certificates all say location is
Russia/Poland together, obituary says Wilno, Poland. Thank you, Molly

Most of these names look Polish to me, but they could be Jewish as well.
There's nothing here that I'd call evidence of being Jewish.

A few members have listed MALLIN as a name they are searching. The
Family Finder shows Lorne Mallin >from Vancouver as being interested in

If Lorne Mallin is online or if anyone else out there has information
about descendants of Naftoli Hirsh MALLIN, d. 17 Oct. 1925, buried in
the Scharey Tzedek Cemetery, Winnipeg, can they please contact me? He
was the maternal grand-father of my late father-in-law Irving Lyons, and
I have only just found out about him. Evidently, as well as his
daughter, Chaya, (my husband's grandmother) there was a son John who
lived in Leduc, Alberta. My husband (who lived in Edmonton, less than
15 miles away >from Leduc) had no knowledge of Naftoli Hirsch and was
unaware of the existence of any other family.

Nick Landau <N.Landau@...>

Sweden was neutral during WWII so I am unclear how the King of Sweden or
Sweden could have liberated any concentration camp.

Nick Landau

It is my understanding that there was only one concentration camp
liberated by the king of Sweden. Does anyone know which one that was?

Thanks a lot !

finding items from your ancstral shtetl or landsmanshaft #general

Andrew Blumberg <ablumberg@...>

I thought that some of you might be interested to know that there are
antique items that go up for auction on major auction sites that are from
shtetls. I have no connection with any of the auctions. There are typically
books, documents, photos, postcards and Yizkor books up for auction. Today
I noticed something that spurred me to post this message. They are a pair
of engraved sterling silver Kiddush cups >from the 1929 30th anniversary of
a landsmanshaft. I wish I could find such a thing >from the verein that my
grandfather belonged to!!!

I did a search and found someone on JewishGen who had gathered cemetery and
other information about the landsmanshaft and emailed her to let her know
that these items were available.

For those not aware, the auction sites allow you to create an alert that
will email you anytime a new auction that contains your search term is
posted.
