Final word from the Seattle 2016 Conference #southafrica

Janette Silverman <cochairs@...>

If you attended the Conference, did you get to every session you wanted
to see? Did you hear buzz about sessions you wish you had been to? What
about the one that created an Aha! moment you want to recapture (like
Devin Naar's keynote or Judy Russell's banquet talk)?

You still can subscribe to the LIVE! on-demand service that will let you
watch many of the best sessions of the past week after you get home. You
can subscribe on line, for 90 days of on-demand viewing for $179.
On-demand viewing is good through 12 November 2016

To subscribe, go to the Attendee Service Center, log in, select Buy
LIVE!, Edit your account, and click Continue to the page with the LIVE!
Full Add On check box. Check it and continue to the confirmation and
payment pages. The Attendee Service Center will remain open next week,
but don't procrastinate, because we will have to close it soon.

For those who did not register for the Conference, please give us a
chance to regroup for a couple of days. Then, beginning 15 August, go
to the New Registration page at
https://s4.goeshow.com/iajgs/annual/2016/registration_form.cfm
We don't know how long we can keep that page open, so please do it
before August 19.

Goldman family research #ukraine

Edith Goldman <phal4gal@...>

Dear Group,

I have copies of my great grandfather's and his sons' entry records at
Ellis Island. Does anyone in this SIG have any info about Goldman
(David or Tisie, he seems to have changed his name at some point) from
Dombrowitza? They arrived at Ellis Island on the Coronia on April 7,
1909.

Thank you in advance.

Looking For Death Records and Refugee Information ~1919 Ukraine/Romania #ukraine

Shawn Weil

Ukraine-SIGers-

My grandmother's family (BROITMAN) survived the pogroms of Savran, Ukraine
and fled 400 miles away to Bucharest, Romania c. 1919. In the few years they
lived there, family history has it that three of my grandmother's siblings
died of "water poisoning" (Moshe, Lisa, Chamiel, all born between 1908 &
1918). It is not clear to me if they died in Bucharest or somewhere in
between. The family immigrated to Toronto, Canada in Nov 1924 and to the US
(Philadelphia then Brooklyn) in 1927. I've found contemporary accounts of
the pogroms in that region (link below), but would like to know more about
their lives as refugees and more details about the deaths of her siblings.

Can anyone suggest sources I might use to find more information and/or more
context?

Yiddish expressions #general

R Jaffer

I need help with the two Yiddish expressions in the following sentences.

My mother was a profetke [?], selling chickens in the heart of the
city, and her son was a porter. They called him Godel Mamzer
[bastard].

A.G. was a shtam borer [?] and had nine measures of speech. He would
tie together word upon word and story upon story and you never knew
when nor how he would end.

Please send your response privately.

Thank you,

This week's Yizkor book excerpt on the JewishGen Facebook page #general

Bruce Drake <BDrake@...>

This week's excerpt (http://bit.ly/2bhaQkF) is >from the Yizkor book of
Molchad (Maytchet) in Belarus, a little over 100 miles southwest of Minsk.
The Jewish population of the town was 1,888 in 1900. The author of this
account, A. Ben-Shalom, had hooked up with a Russian partisan group, as he
recounts in his article, "The raid...and the meeting." He remembers it as
an unexpected opportunity for revenge for what the Germans had done in
the town, but his story takes a haunting twist.
