Searching for Ethel Beane FOREMAN in Baltimore #general

David Laskin

I am researching an African American woman named Ethel Beane Foreman,
born White Stone, Virginia, 1895, died Great Neck, NY, 1964. Ethel, a
domestic servant, lived with my family for the last 10 years of her
life. I know that in 1930 she lived at 2119 MuCulloh, St. in Baltimore,
and I recently discovered that the Sharon Israel synagogue was five
doors down >from Ethel's address. I'm guessing that Ethel worked as a
domestic for a nearby family, very possibly a Jewish family like ours.

I'd love to hear >from anyone with memories of her.

She sometimes used the surnames Caster and Nickens. If you knew her,
you wouldn't forget her -- reddish complexion, near-sighted, crusty,
fierce, hard-working, super responsible, with a heart of gold.

Thanks!

Soviet Merchant Agency "Amtorg" #ukraine

Alexander Sharon recently wrote that in 1931 was a record year for
reverse immigration by U.S. residents to the USSR due to advertisements
by the Soviet Merchant Agency "Amtorg" for specialists. I believe that
my grandfather, a doctor, was one of those who returned. Are there any
data bases that contain information about those who returned to the
U.S.S.R. as a result of this program? I would be most interested in
researching them.

These are the death record for Sora Pessa Friedman, wife of Moses
Abramson (also known as Friedman) or son of Abram, died 16/2/1854 in
Bauska, Bausk, Courland.

The film reference at the Latvia Deaths Database is LWA/5024/2/140.

They are on ViewMate at the following addresses ...

Although the images do not have very good resolution, I would
appreciate any family details you might discern, especially >from the

ViewMate translation requested (Hebrew or Yiddish?) #germany

Dear SIGgers,

On ViewMate 55089 I have posted the image of an inscription in
handwritten Hebrew characters found on the flyleaf of a book on
midwifery published in Berlin in 1830. I would like a translation in
English and am curious to know if anything is said about the woman
whose name appears above the inscription. The book belonged to Dr.
Ludwik Finkelstein, a well-known scientist who died in London in 2011.
His wife, Mirjam FINKELSTEIN (WIENER) Z"L was a descendant of the
PHILIPSBORN family.

New Raczki Emigration Data #general

I have added Raczki emigration data to the Kehilalinks website. No vital
records or census information >from the 19th or early 20th century has been
found so this is a small effort to help descendant researchers.

You can get to the website quickly by searching "Raczki Jewishgen"

Gerard GRUMBACH from France #general

Eve Line Blum <eve.line.blum@...>

I'm searching information concerning Gerard GRUMBACH who was deported >from
France in May 1944. His place and date of birth seem to have been mispelled
when he arrived in Drancy, and it seems impossible to find the exact
information.

He was registered as Gerard GRUMBACH, born in PARIS or PARYS, on 12 March
1893, but the searches into the decennial tables in the 20 arrondissements
of PARIS were made in vain.

Does anyone have genealogical information concerning Gerard GRUMBACH?

Voter Lists in the Pale of Settlement #general

Judith Singer

Does anyone know the qualifications for being included on a voter list in Kovno
Gubernia during the period >from about 1880 to 1905? In Kavarskas, there are
about 100 names on the voter lists for 1880 and 1882 and nearly 500 names on
the Box Taxpayer List for 1877, only a few year earlier, so the qualifications
must have been different. Did people on the voter list have to own property or
have a trade? Or did the voter list include only those who voted, not everyone
who was eligible to vote? Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you -
Judith Singer
