Terezin #austria-czech

Adding to the recent posts about the camp I went there some years ago on a
personal tour arranged by Sylvia Wittman of Wittman Tours in Prague. It must
have been about 25 years ago now and I took my teenage children so they
could understand something of what my parents had gone through. My daughter
was 14 and my son 12 years old. It made a big impression on all three of us,
and Sylva was an excellent guide. II don't know if her company is still
going but I highly recommend it. The Jewish Company Heritage Tours in
Maislova runs tours too as does CEDOK the official Czech tour company.
I've just finished reading a novel about the Terezin camp written by the
grandson of a Terezin survivor and Jewish teacher Jakub Randa who was
deported there >from Prague. Bram Presser his grandson who lives in Melbourne
has written the novel but it's based on a lot of facts he's researched and
is worth reading to get some understanding of the Czech Shoah. It's well
written and quite a gripping novel published by Text a Jewish owned company
in Melbourne. The title is "The book of dirt". Spoiler alert, there is a
golem.
Another book I strongly recommend for anyone with Australian connections is
the new book by Dr Anna Rosenbaum of Sydney. "The safe house Down Under" is
published by Peter Lang in London and tells in detail the story of the Czech
emigration to Australia after the Munich agreement and up to the mid years
of the war. Anna has turned her doctorate into a book that tells a very
fascinating story of both the British and Australian and the Czech
Governments struggles with Hitler and each other. It explained to me why my
parents were frightened to speak German in the streets of Sydney after we
arrived in 1948!
