What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?

How do I access the Group’s webpage?

So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?

cemetery in Tisza-L=F6k, Szabolcs county, photographed, please let me know= =20 privately. (Tisza-L=F6k was the sz=E9khely, or district seat, for Dadai= als=F3=20 j=E1r=E1s in Szabolcs, and is not the same town as Tisza-Luc, which is in=20 Zemplen). And thanks to all who responded on my question about naming=20 conventions. only ones shown for District VII are for 1895 and 1897. I'm looking for sisters and brothers of my husband's father. His record was available in Budapest at the District VII office when we were there last October. Thanks for any reply, Pat

once I see the book. I already ordered... By the way, Szmulewski mentions and writes about many French Jews who were with him in the Auschwitz Camp and partcipated in the Resistance movement. We might translate the book to French also. Just one example on page 69 translated already to French: "Le groupe “Canadien”, tel qu’il était surnommé, qui s’occupait de la réception des convois sur la rampe, renforça sa coopération avec l’organisation de la résistance. Cette coopération était très importante au niveau de l’information concernant les transports. Le kapo (qui était responsable vis-à-vis des autorités du camp) était un Juif autrichien qui ne gênait en rien les activités des résistants. Les responsables de l’information étaient les suivants: Itzik Friedman, Stein, Benzion Botsza et son fils, Sam, Bekas, David Lederman, Zanich Breier, Green, Itshe Lemberger, Leib Fuchs, Philipe Wodka, Leibele de Grodno, Yankel Kwitek, Herschl et beaucoup d’autres." research my husband's family who were >from Pinsk. So far, as I navigate your sites, I see no mention of Pinsk. We were recently informed by a friend who travelled to Pinsk a few years ago, that 3600 Jews were taken outside the town limits and shot. Is there a Yiskor book for the city? Any direction you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Righteous Gentile Candidates

Dear Genners,
A short time ago one of my neighbors told me of her family's activities during WWII. The family consisted of Auke HARTSTRA, his wife Anna KOEN, their daughters Anna Maria b.1920 and my neighbor Tine (now Olson) b.1930. Two houses away >from the Hartstra family, at either #50 or 42 Voortsweg, Enschede Netherlands, lived a Jewish family, named Ausen (Aussen). The family consisted of the senior Aussen, their son and his wife and their toddler/preschooler, red-haired son. One day members of the Resistance told the Hartstras the Nazis were coming that night to round up Jews and for them to warn the Ausens. The Ausens refused to believe them, but Tine requested that the little Ausen boy be allowed to stay in their home *one* night. Permission was granted. Circa 3 or 4 am the Nazis came in trucks and took the Ausen family, never to return. Some of the Hartstra neighbors were Nazi collaborators and they feared for the boy's life. Consequently he was taken by the Resistance to live with a farm family outside of Enschede. Tine believes he was probably adopted. Another part of the Hartstra's history relates another set of neighbors. Late 1942 or early 1943 the Hartstra's moved to Delden. Next door lived a family named COHEN: Mr/Mrs. COHEN and the husband's brother. The Cohen's ran a butcher shop in town. Again the Resistance told the Hartstra's the Nazis were about to round up Jews. The Cohens listened to the Hartstra's and went to live with the mother of Tine's brother-in-law: Mr/Mrs Henry LAST ala Anne FRANK. Last in Dolphia & ran a barber shop in Glanerbrug. The Hartstras took as much of the Cohen's equipment and furnishing as they could, stored them their attic and post war, the Cohen's recovered their goods. As a result, the Cohen's were able to re-open their butcher shop in Delden. their daughter married and the couple ran a butcher shop in Hengelo. In my opinion, the Hartstra family, Tine being the sole survivor, deserves to be awarded the status of Righteous Gentile. However the above requires substantiation and validation >from someone other than Tine. Is there anyone out there who knows anything about these families? If so, please contact me privately ASAP.
