A New book on genealogy #general

IlyaZeldes <ilyaz@...>

Dear Fellow JewishGenners,
just recently, I've published a new book "A Genealogical History of the
Ajnbunder, Zeldes and Associated Families". This book is a result of over
40 years research into my ancestors past >from the early 19th century in
Belarus, Ukraine, Lithuania, Dagestan, Gruzia, Germany and other places. The
book has 300 pages full with text, photographs, photocopies of documents,
etc. The book is available in a paperback and in E-book format. If you are
interested in previewing or ordering a book, please contact me privately
and I'll provide more information.
Sincerely yours,

Ilya Zeldes, Ph.D.

Rebecca (Regina) ROGOVSKY descendants. #general

Marilyn Siegel <jadzgran@...>

Hi All,
I am hoping someone in Israel will be able to help me find some "lost"
cousins.
My grandfather, Louis Silverman, had a sister, Rebecca Silberman or
Silbermann. Their father was Beryl and they were born in Austria, in
Sokolow, I believe. At some point in time Rebecca emigrated to Israel with
her husband, Jan, and lived in Haifa or Jerusalem. Jan was an engineer,
and they had a son or son-in-law named Vladeck, who probably would be
about 60 years old today. He had at least one child named Iris, about 40
years old now.
A cousin saw them all at a Bar Mitzvah in 1978. Regina was very
elderly then, and a grandmother. My husband and I were in Israel shortly
before, and tried to see the family. We made a date, but the taxi driver
could not find the address. It was Kiryat something. I was quite
disappointed, since I had wanted to meet my Great-Aunt Rebecca and her
family.
The other Silberman siblings were Philip, Louis, Morris and Ita.
Just realized I made a mistake. Beryl was my grandfather Louis'
brother, and Rebecca was his daughter. Therefore, Rebecca and I are 1st
cousins, once removed.
I hope this doesn't sound too complicated, and I also hope that
someone will recognize some of the names.
Eagerly awaiting some word, and many thanks in any event.
Marilyn in Fl.

Florence Marmor reported in The Galitzianer (and posted on the GG web site:
http://www.jewishgen.org/galicia/ms-names.html) information about Mokom
Sholom Cemetery (aka Bayside Cemetery) in Ozone Park, N.Y., the site of an
historic Jewish free burial area that dates >from 1880 to 1901.

"It ... is the burial place of 11,500+ men, women, children, infants and
stillbirths. It was the first organized attempt by New York's Jews to
provide for this major need. New York City had many indigent Jews, among
which were many Galitzianers, in the time frame of the free burial."

A dedicated group of researchers spent a great deal of time at the NYC
Municipal Archives to obtain information about these people >from NYC death
certificates. There is a searchable database of surnames on this site.

Death certificates are issued for everyone who dies (paupers, too) and a
cemetery name was provided whenever possible. Obtain the death certificate
for the relative you seek. Hopefully you will learn where s/he is buried.

Another instance: my cousin found a pauper's grave for a mentally retarded
cousin who had been abandoned many years ago, died at a mental institution,
and is buried in a Staten Island cemetery. There was no one to pay for a
tombstone, so there is none at this time. However, the cousin's name was
available at the cemetery office; a death certificate was issued.

Has anyone had a favorable experience searching for these in NY. I
understand little is indexed. I am looking for a relative that died
between 1904 and 1910. Will this be a prohibitive search?

Help with Location names: In Russia? #general

Stanley Judd <stanleyjudd@...>

I have been researching the EIDB for relatives. After identifying all the
locations I could in WOWW, the following remain. I either could not find
them at all or there were too many possibilities. Presumably the names
were first given orally to the writer of the passenger manifest, written
down by that writer as they sounded and then transcribed by a reader into
the EIDB. If you can identify any of these names, preferably with
reference to a location in WOWW, I would be in your debt.

Thank you very much to all responsible for indexing these records and making
it available on line.

I have been able to find birth entries for my grandfather Jakob Hers(z)
FERNBACH, as well as several of his brothers and sisters. His mother's name
is given several times as ZWECHER, once as HAUTLER f ZWECHER and twice as
ZWECHER/HAUTLER. In another entry her surname is given as FERNBACH, although
I am not sure whether this refers to the same person. Does anyone know what
the letter "f" means here?

Possible JewishGen outage if Hurricane hits area #galicia

Carol Skydell, writing for the JewishGen team, sent this message today:

There is a distinct possibility that Hurricane Lili will hit the Houston
Texas area within the next day or so. Even while we are watching the
storm's progress, we have been preparing should we be hit.

Everything possible is being done to ensure that JewishGen loses no data
and all our records are safe, but we may be off line, depending on how
severely the area is affected.

Dea Peter
you can have two subscriptions to the list, one for each email adress.
I did not check, but you may even be able to set one to " nomail" so as to keep it as an outgoing adress only.

At present, I am a member at (and receive messages at) peter@... - which is

But, when I send out emails, it's easiest for me (for various reasons) to do it from

Result: Lyris fails to recognize me as a member and rejects my message. Is there any way
