JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Shalom,
As is my custom, at the beginning of each month I endeavor to let you know some of the goings-on and highlights relating to the Yizkor Book Project over the previous month. For a start, once again, I am pleased to inform you that two additional translation projects were completed during this past month and the projects I am referring to are: - Czestochowa, Poland (Resistance and Destruction in Ghetto Czestochowa) which Gloria Berkenstat Freund has single-handedly translated >from beginning to end - quite a remarkable accomplishment. It should be noted here that this is the second book which she has completely translated and kindly presented to the Yizkor Book Project. The complete translation of yet another Yizkor book about this community is on the horizon and Gloria does deserve our utmost appreciation for these translations and all the work she does for the YB Project. - Jonava, Lithuania (Jonava On the Banks of the Vylia; In memory of the destroyed Jewish community of Jonava) has been deftly coordinated over many years by Susan Goldsmith and it is purely through her dedication to this project, that the full translation of this book has become a reality. We thank Susan sincerely for seeing this considerable project through to its successful completion. from time to time, we add in transliterations of the necrologies appearingin the various the Yizkor books, as these important lists do provide us with unique information on the people >from the particular communities who were killed in the Holocaust. These necrologies were compiled by the survivors of these communities and whilst these lists don't always include all those killed, they are considerable in length and include important facts and at the same time, do remind us the unfathomable, enormity of the Holocaust. The necrologies added last month, for instance, were for the communities of Kamen Kashirskiy and Kuty in the Ukraine and include several thousand names. Over the years, we have transliterated a great deal of the necrologies and our intention is to continue transliterating these lists till all are available online. In parallel, Max Heffler and his team have been suiting the lists that have been prepared so that they can be uploaded to the Yizkor Book necrology database, providing ready access to the names and relevant data >from the books existing in the Yizkor Book Project. Finally, I would like to note that we recently received the first translation into Polish of an article >from the Nowy Dwor Mazowiecki Yizkor book and more will be added >from time to time. The YB Project is about making the material >from the Yizkor Books as widely exposed as possible and translating the text into Polish allows ready access to readers of this language to material concerning the thriving communities that existed in Poland before the Holocaust, material which is quite often unavailable anywhere else. And now for details of all the updates and additions that were carried out in the Yizkor Book Project in May. We have added in 10 new entries: - Bernartice nad Odrou, Czech Republic (The Jews and Jewish Communities of Bohemia in the past and present) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/bohemia/boh031.html - Blatna, Czech Republic (The Jews and Jewish Communities of Bohemia in the past and present) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/bohemia/boh040.html - Borshchovichi, Ukraine (Memorial Book of the Jewish communities of Dziedzilow, Winniki, Barszczowice, Pidelisek, Pidbaritz, Kukizov, Old Jarczow, Pekalowice, Kamenopole & Nowy Jarczow) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Dziedzilow/Dzi081.html - Galanta, Slovakia (Encyclopedia of Jewish Communities in Slovakia) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/pinkas_slovakia/slo128.html - Nowy Dwor Mazowiecki, Poland (Memorial book of Nowy-Dwor) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Nowy_Dwor/Nowy_Dworp.html [Polish] - Novyy Yarychiv, Ukraine (Memorial Book of the Jewish communities of Dziedzilow, Winniki, Barszczowice, Pidelisek, Pidbaritz, Kukizov, Old Jarczow, Pekalowice, Kamenopole & Nowy Jarczow) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Dziedzilow/Dzi091.html - Odrzywol, Poland (Encyclopedia of Jewish Communities in Poland) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/pinkas_poland/pol1_00041.html - Ozorkow, Poland (Encyclopedia of Jewish Communities in Poland) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/pinkas_poland/pol1_00042.html - Uniejow, Poland (Encyclopedia of Jewish Communities in Poland) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/pinkas_poland/pol1_00046.html - Vynnyky, Ukraine (Memorial Book of the Jewish communities of Dziedzilow, Winniki, Barszczowice, Pidelisek, Pidbaritz, Kukizov, Old Jarczow, Pekalowice, Kamenopole & Nowy Jarczow) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Dziedzilow/Dzi071.html And we have continued to update 19 of our existing projects: - Bilhorod-Dnistrovs'kyy, Ukraine (Akkerman and the towns of its district; memorial book) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Akkerman/Akkerman.html - Brody, Ukraine (An Eternal Light: Brody in Memoriam) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/brody/brody.html - Chmielnik, Poland (Memorial Book of Chmielnik) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Chmielnik/Chmielnik.html - Czestochowa, Poland (The Jews of Czestochowa) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Czestochowa1/Czestochowa1.html - Czestochowa, Poland (Resistance and Destruction in Ghetto Czestochowa) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Czestochowa4/Czestochowa4.html - Didyliv, Ukraine (Memorial Book of the Jewish communities of Dziedzilow, Winniki, Barszczowice, Pidelisek, Pidbaritz, Kukizov, Old Jarczow, Pekalowice, Kamenopole & Nowy Jarczow) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Dziedzilow/Dziedzilow.html - Dieveniskis, Lithuania (Devenishki book; memorial book) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/dieveniskes/dieveniskes.html - Jonava, Lithuania (Jonava On the Banks of the Vylia; In memory of the destroyed Jewish community of Jonava) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Jonava/Jonava.html - Kamen Kashirskiy, Ukraine (Kamen Kashirskiy Book) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Kamen_Kashirskiy/Kamen_Kashirskiy.html - Krasnik, Poland (Book of Krasnik) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/krasnik/krasnik.html - Kuty, Ukraine (Kitever memorial book) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Kuty/Kuty.html - Lviv, Ukraine (Lwow Volume: Part I) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/lviv/lviv.html - Miechow, Poland (Miechov Memorial Book, Charsznica and Ksiaz) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Miechow/Miechow.html - Ozarow, Poland (Memories of Ozarow) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Ozarow/Ozarow.html - Slovakia (Encyclopedia of Jewish Communities in Slovakia) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/pinkas_slovakia/pinkas_slovakia.html - Sokolow Podlaski, Poland (Memorial book Sokolow-Podlask) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Sokolowa_podlaski/Sokolowa_podlaski.html - Tarnogrod, Poland (Book of Tarnogrod; in memory of the destroyed Jewish community) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/tarnogrod/tarnogrod.html - Turiysk, Ukraine (Memorial book of Trisk) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Turiysk/Turiysk.html - Tykocin, Poland (Memorial book of Tiktin) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Tykocin/Tykocin.html Some important links to note: - This month's additions and updates are flagged at http://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/translations.html to make it easy to find them. - All you would like to know about the Yizkor Books in Print Project http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/ybip.html - Yizkor Book Translation Funds http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/v_projectslist.asp?project_cat=23 where your financial support will assist in seeing more translations go online. Secular Names of Rabbis
#rabbinic
Beth Long
I am a non-Jewish person who has done extensive research in Hungarian
records (both religious and civil), and have many rabbinic familes documented in my database. Sometimes, someone will write to me and ask for information about this line or the other, which I am happy to provide. However, I often struggle to identify the individual they are asking about, because the tree they send me contains only the Yiddish names or rabbinic titles, etc. I spend a great deal of time trying to integrate the names and identify who is who and painstakingly merge the individuals so that both Jewish and civil names are in the database, along with the birth, death, and marriage information I find in the records. To some extent, it seems that religious Jewish genealogy and secular Jewish genealogy exist in two different "silos". It would be nice to see more projects combining the two in the interest of maximizing information. I would be interested to hear >from others who have attempted such projects (other than Neil Rosenstein, as I am aware of his books and have helped him document some of the Hungarian rabbinic familes). Shalom,
As is my custom, at the beginning of each month I endeavor to let you know some of the goings-on and highlights relating to the Yizkor Book Project over the previous month. 12,000 matches of 20 centimorgans or more. When I limit the list to at least 100 CM I have 1,850 matches. I am a beginner and I want to know what to do when many people don't have trees, or they are private? Even the people with trees don't give towns, just countries. I can't find any matching surnames. I have exactly one match, a first cousin twice removed. When I put my raw data into gedmatch I get exactly one match, another first cousin twice removed. That's it, I know their families. No matching surnames or towns. So what do I do know, just wait or what? Many thanks. Shalom,
As is my custom, at the beginning of each month I endeavor to let you know some of the goings-on and highlights relating to the Yizkor Book Project over the previous month.
