Some of you have noticed that you received no posts or digests between
August 2nd and 5th. An unforeseen technical problem caused about a
third of the subscribers to JewishGen and hosted lists to be cut off
during that time. The problem has been resolved, and all subscribers
should now be receiving posts and digests normally.

If you think you might have been one of those affected, you can
retrieve any posts you missed by following the directions in the
JewishGen Support Center at

http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen/Support.htm#q3.8

You will have to send a request for each list you are subscribed to.
Requests can be sent as separate lines in one e-mail or in separate
e-mails. You should specify the date range

20110802-20110804

if you are a digest subscriber, and

if you receive individual messages ("mail" mode).

Were Jews in Latvia immune to appendicitis? If they were, then why were they? #latvia

Stephen Weinstein

I was going through the causes of death listed on Christine Usdin's
site and noticed that appendicitis or ruptured appendix did not seem
to be as common as I would have expected. I had the computer search
over 24,000 records for the string "pend" and it found nothing.

Does anyone know why this was?

Was medical care for appendicitis so good that everyone survived?
Does appendicitis only occur after eating nonkosher food?
Did they always misdiagnosis it?
Did Christine make a mistake?

If this is anything more than misdiagnosis or mistranslation, then it
could have great significance far beyond the field of genealogy.

If it was a difference in diet, medical care, air pollution, or
whatever, then this could lead to an advance in treatment or
prevention. If they actually had a better treatment, it could be
"rediscovered". Even if the difference was diet or environmental,
this could be significant for prevention efforts today.

If it appendicitis only occurs in individuals with a specific gene
that was not present in the Latvian Jewish population, then a test for
that gene could be developed, so that anyone at risk could be warned
to watch for the symptoms and get treatment in time.

Dear Friends,

My maternal grandfather's family - KATZ, STERN, KATZMANN - came >from the
small town of Flieden, near Fulda.

We have had contact there with a local historian, Raimund Henkel, who knows
the entire Jewish community history. An amazing guy.

I would love to be in touch with anyone else who has been in touch with
Raimund. I have some questions about his work in Flieden. Please contact
me directly as soon as possible. Thanks.
