BERKOWITZ Notary living in Paris 1891 #france

Rivka Schirman <capitetes@...>

Rue de Rochechouart used to be almost exclusively jewish (as the
majority of the 9 district of Paris) before the war. Now it is mainly
North African, as the name of the restaurant indicates. I could find
no such restaurant in the phone book in this address, and even if I
did, I doubt very much the owners would have known anything.

That said, the medals and band you mention may very well reveal
something. If he was granted French decorations - military or civil
- he'd be listed. As for the indications on the back of the photo -
are you sure the address and date on the back of it do not refer to
the photographer rather than to your relative ?

Anyway, what I suggest that you scan the photo (front and back) and
that you also take a "close-up" of the medals and upload it to
viewmate. I am sure I'll not be the only one to have a look so, all
in all, among al the suggestions you'll get, maybe you'll make a step
further :-)

Having visited Lviv last year I can recognize several photos.
Pictures #1 and #2 are of a pre-World War II synagogue which is now
a Chabad synagogue and Jewish Community center. Note the blue paint
splatter and the broken windows resulting >from vandalism.

The domed building in photos #6 and #7 is the former Jewish Hospital.
It is still used as a hospital. Photo #15 (next to last) is the site
of a destroyed synagogue. The last photo (#16) is a former synagogue
which was converted into a gymnasium by the Russian government after
WWII. It is now unused but may be returned to the Jewish community.

Dear Genners,
I am searching for information about any family
of Boris Kaplan. A relative believes that he was
born in Poland and was a dentist. He married my
Aunt Shayna Leybovich/Lubovitch/Leibowitz in
Kovno, Lithuania and they lived there before
WWII.

My aunt was killed in the Holocaust. There was a
child, possibly a boy, and no one seems to be
sure if the child survived or not. Boris escaped
and is recorded as having been in Mü-Freimann
(Germany) and then in Italy. Information I have
received suggests that those people in Italy
usually went to Israel so he may have lived out
his years there.

Boris did contact relatives in Ireland after the
war but those relatives still alive don't know
exactly what happened to him.

If there is anyone who knew this Boris Kaplan, or
any other, I would appreciate hearing >from them.
His family may not know that he was previously
married or that there may have been another
child.

Please respond to msnodrog@...

Thank you in advance for your response and
concern.

Hi,
Broche is the Yiddish pronunciation of the Hebrew name Bracha. The meaning of this
name is "a blessing". It is possible that your grandfather's sister in law was
called Broche Rivka and started using the anglicized form of her second name in
the new country. It may also be possible that the name Rebecca was chosen
arbitrarily, because it is a combination of both a jewish name and a name easily
pronounced in English.
