JGSI - Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois April 29 meeting notice #general

News Releases JGSI-Events <jgsi-events@...>

Subject: JGS of Illinois April 29 meeting

Date: Sunday, April 29, 2012
Check-in time: 1 p.m.

Place: Temple Beth Israel
3601 W. Dempster St.
Skokie, Illinois

Topic: "The 1940 Census and Online Finding Aids"

Presenter: Dr. Joel Weintraub, contributor to the Morse One-Step website

A special program of interest to all family history researchers called
"The 1940 Census and Online Finding Aids" will be presented by Dr. Joel
Weintraub, an emeritus biology professor at California State University,
Fullerton, on Sunday, April 29, 2012, at the Jewish Genealogical Society
of Illinois meeting in Skokie.

This two-lecture event will be free to JGSI members. Non-members will be
charged $10, which can be applied to JGSI membership until June 1, 2012.
Check-in for this program will begin at 1 p.m. April 29 at Temple Beth
Israel, 3601 W. Dempster St., Skokie, Illinois.

In the first part of the program, Weintraub will discuss what can be
found in the 1940 Census and controversies concerning it. The second
part will focus on how to search the 1940 Census for relatives and
ancestors.

Weintraub has worked with fellow genealogist Stephen Morse to produce
several online census searching utilities for both the federal and the
New York state censuses on the Morse One-Step website, a major online
resource for genealogical researchers. The 1940 Census records became
available on April 2 on several websites, but they won't be fully
indexed for several months; therefore, the finding aids to be discussed
by Weintraub need to be used in order to locate ancestors' information.

or phone 312-666-0100.

Hi,

My father and I were thinking of putting up a gravestone for our
ancestor who was buried in the Ghetto Field at Lodz Cemetery, with no=20
marker,
during the Holocaust.

We have visited the site, and saw that others have done this in the
past.

Could someone email me privately with information on how to go about
doing this?

In my Lithuanian research I have found MANY Gordon families while still
in Lithuania. I would say it was a fairly common name.
On the other hand, my Veshasky family changed their name to Saul before

when and where.
