JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Searching for descendants of Eliezer ben Kalman KASZUB (Israel? France - CASSUBE? Other)
#france
Dear Genners,
I would like to reach any descendants of Eliezer KASZUB, possibly born 1898; son of Kalman and Nauma (nee KEMPNER) KASZUB. Eliezer submitted 43 pages of testimony [POTs] to Yad Vashem for friends and family many years ago, mainly for the KASZUB family of Lodz, Poland; and possibly some >from Krosniewice, Poland. The submitted pages are in Hebrew, and I presume Eliezer lived in Israel. Nauma is a recently "discovered" cousin of my KEMPNER family. Some of the POTs relate to KEMPNERs, and many to KASZUBs. I don't know exactly how the French KASZUB branch is related, but I understand that they spell the surname CASSUBE. Thank you! INTRO - Seek guide for a research travel in Germany. Researching Families From Kassel, Lisberg, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Schluechtern, Eppelsheim, Hainsfarth, etc.

William Meyers <bpmeyers@...>
Hello: My name is William Meyers II (Bill) and I Just joined the Group.
My wife and I are going to Germany this Spring in mid-May for a convention in Bremen and, after that, are renting a car to drive south through Hannover, Kassel, to the Bamberg, Fuerth and Nuremberg areas ending our trip in Munich. We plan to stay a couple of days in each area and are interested in finding someone local who speaks English and might be willing to act as a guide for us. We would like to see the Jewish areas and old parts of the towns that existed in the early to mid-1800s when our families emigrated to come to America, if there is anything remaining or rebuilt. I'm sorry to say we are Reform Jews and don't speak Hebrew, Yiddish or German but if we were to visit a cemetery or cemeteries it would be good if our guide could interpret inscriptions for us, prticularly if they relate to our families. I Have been doing genealogy for many years though I'd probably be considered an intermediate researcher. I have identified the birth and death dates of all my grandparents, great grandparents and most of my great, great grandparents including those of my wife's family. My immediate goal is to add at least one more generation to each line to the extent possible. I understand this will likely involve accessing records in Germany or records that have been scanned and brought to the US or are on line. Family names and town they left to come to America of interest are: MEYERS - Lisberg/Bamberg, KIngdom of Bavaria; GOODMAN - Lisberg/Bambrg LOWENSTEIN - Peckelsheim/Hannover, Niedersachsen; KAHN - Shluechtern, Grand Duchy of Baden; LEVY - Schluechtern; KUHN - Niederhochstadt, Rhinelnd Pfalz; SCHWARZ - Kaiserslautern, Rhineland Pfalz; HAHN - Eppelsheim/Flomborn; BERG - Springberg/ Schneidermuhl, Prussia; HEIMAN - Ichenhausen, Bavaria; HEILBRONNER -Bavaria; SALLER and GERSON - Kassel, Hessen; ERLANGER - Fuerth; NEWBURGER - Nuremberg; GOLDMAN - Burgebrach; OBERDORFER- Hainsfarth; LICHTEN -Hohenzolleren, Hechingen, Baden, Wuerttemberg; WALTER and PLOESCH - Nuremberg, Kingdom of Bavaria; and LEWIS (LOUIE)(LEVI) - Wuerzburg, Kingdom of Bavaria We'll appreciate any help that is offered. Bill Meyers, Suburban Baltimore, MD bpmeyers@... MODERATOR NOTE: Welcome to GerSIG! You should enter all the above names and towns in the JGFF. Please use the GerSIG Archives to help preparing for your research visits to your ancestral towns. Indexing Vitebsk City Duma Lists
#belarus
Max Preston
Hi all,
I have gathered copies of Vitebsk city duma lists (voter lists) from 1905, 1906, 1907, and 1912. Many of these lists identify the religion of the individuals named, which makes it possible for us to create a searchable list of the Jews listed. For the lists that don't identify religion, I suppose we will just have to create a searchable list of everyone. Anyway, with the help of Banai Lynn Feldstein, I am testing out Crowd Sourced Indexing as a way to get these lists indexed so that they can be made searchable. As a test-run, I have uploaded a small portion of the 1907 duma lists. If anyone is able to read Cyrillic (Russian) characters and is willing to help, please check out this initial, small project at https://csindexing.com/projectinformation.php?p=356. Thanks! Yom Hashoah Commemorated April 12 in Israel and the United States
#general
Jan Meisels Allen
Starting the evening of Wednesday April 11 through Thursday April 12 the
United States and Israel commemorate Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, remembering the 6 million Jews and 5 million others who perished in the Holocaust as a result of Nazi Germany actions. Yom HaShoah is commemorated on the 27th of Nisan, a week after the seventh day of Passover and a week before Yom Hazikaron (Memorial Day for Israel's fallen soldiers). It marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. In North America Yom Hashoah commemorations, find it more practical to hold commemorative ceremonies on the closest Sunday to Yom Hashoah while others celebrate the day on April 19, the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. In Israel, it is a national memorial day and public holiday. It was inaugurated on 1953, anchored by a law signed by then Prime Minister of Israel David Ben-Gurion and the President of Israel Yitzhak Ben-Zvi. This is a different commemoration than International Holocaust Memorial Day which was commemorated on January 27 this year, it is declared by the United Nations. The United Nations and the European Union commemorate the same anniversary with an event called International Holocaust Remembrance Day. It started in 2005 when the United Nations marked the 60th anniversary of the end of the Holocaust. Look at your area for local commemorative community events. Some JGSs also have programs to remember the day. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum lists their events include the reading in the US Capitol 's Emancipation ceremony Monday April 9 at 11 a.m..
