Re: Is it Abelski? Is it Dewaltoff" #lithuania

Fred Millner <flmillner@...>

My great-grandfather Meilich Berko Milner (Samuel M. Millner) is
listed in a Sirvintos marriage record (14 Jan 1858) as Meylakh Berko
Milner/Yanovsky. This is the only entry family entry I have ever
found that had more than one surname. In this case, Yanovsky is
probably derived >from Samuel's home town, Jonava. It might have been
a nickname for Samuel, identifying him to Sirvintos residents. (His
wife was the daughter of the Sirvintos rabbi.)

It is probably only a coincidence, but worth noting, that Samuel's
brother Shimel (Simon) married about 1870 Liba Mera Ianovski. She and
her family were long-time residents of Musninkai, but they may have
had origins in Jonava. Of course, Janovsky only means "of Jan/John"
so in this case it is not proof of anything.

Yes, names can be mysterious clues.

I have seldom been on Jewishgen in the last few years and have a backlog
of over 6,000 emails to read. Today I went on and 2 names popped up >from
years ago. One Pat Manning, inlaw to my Kempner family and my friend
forever Joyaa Antares. I could not believe my eyes to read the name
Kempner and there it was on the page. Then I looked at the name and saw
Joyaa.

Nauma (nee KEMPNER) KASZUB is not part of my Kempner family.

This week's Yizkor book excerpt on the JewishGen Facebook page #general

Bruce Drake <BDrake@...>

Passover begins this evening. I have posted in the past several Yizkor books
excerpts about the preparations for the holiday in the shtetls of Europe,
which often began in earnest right after Purim, and the joyous celebrations
of it. This week's excerpt >from the Yizkor book of Yedwabne (Jedwabne), Poland
is very different. The "The Unforgetable Passover of 1943" tells the story of
how Jews imprisoned in the death camp of Birkenau managed to have a Seder.
The author of this chapter, Rabbi Chaim Yitzchak Greengrass, writes "The
celebration of this Seder night left imprints on my soul. Now, when I perform
the Passover service, I understand the meaning of the statement that each man
in every generation is obliged to consider himself as if he personally was
redeemed >from slavery into freedom."

This excerpt is one of many that you can find in this year's Passover
Companion. You can download the full Companion by following the URL in the
message posted nearby on the Facebook page by Avraham Groll.
