Neinshtot Shervink #general

I found a note that a family member was >from Neinshtot Shervink .

There's no hit on Jewish Gen or Google for those words spelled that way.

I've no idea where the note came >from or what that might mean. (The
note was connected to the (Americanized) Paine family.

Help, please.

Will the *real* Brody please stand up??? #general

Meyer Denn

Dear Fellow Genners,

I am looking for some advice regarding a village, town or city in Galicia
or Poland proper that would have been referred to in Yiddish as "Brod."

Here is the back story. My paternal grandfather's line continues to be
very elusive. When I was a child, my grandfather used to tell me that his
father was not born in Korczyna (Galicia), the town in which my
grandfather grew up. He used to say that his father was >from a town in
"deep Poland" called Brod. He seemed to indicate that this "Brod" was
actually the Galician city of Brody.

After my grandfather's death in 1981, I inherited his copy of the Yizkor
Book >from Korczyna. In it there was a story about his father in which
the text confirmed my grandfather's statement that his father was indeed
from a place called Brod. The translation reads like this: "They called
him Reb Chaim'l Broder (his family name was actually Denn, but he came
originally >from Brod."

In addition to the fact that Brody is quite distant >from Korczyna for
movement around 1850, I have been researching documents and literature
about Brody and have never come up with a family name Denn or Den living
in Brody. This leads me to believe that it is more likely that my great-
grandfather Chaim Denn actually >from another town or village known as
"Brod."

Can anyone suggest other alternatives for towns or cities in Galicia that
might have been referred to as Brod in Yiddish. Chaim's mother was >from
the village of Baligrod, just south of Lesko, not too far >from Korczyna
to the east.

Any thoughts >from well-versed Galicianer researchers will be greatly
appreciated.

Sincerely,

Meyer Denn
