Obit - Rabbi Ephraim Oshry #general

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>

It is with great sadness that the members of the Kupiskis SIG note the
death of Rabbi Ephraim Oshry, on September 28, 2003. Rabbi Oshry was born
89 years ago in August, 1914, in what was then Kupishok (now Kupiskis),
Lithuania.

He survived the Nazis occupation of Lithuania and the deaths of many of his
family to live a productive and venerable life. His works regarding the
Holocaust are known to most JewishGenners and Litvaks either in the
original Yiddish ("Churban Lita") or the recent English translation ("The
Annihilation of Lithuanian Jewry") and his rabbinical opinions or responsa
are known throughout the world.

For a more detailed description of his life and accomplishments, please see
the New York Times Obit, Sunday, October 5, 2003.
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/10/05/nyregion/05OSHR.html

May his memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him. He will be
missed.

Dear genners,
I have heard >from many genners who generously translated these files, and
who also tried to answer my question. I have thanked all of them
individually, and now would like to extend my appreciation to the entire
group who is so helpful. As a result of this translation, I not only was
able to confirm that my great grandfather was a baker, as well as a
cantor, but learned that our family was a "family of bakers."
I found many names in the caption of the photo that I'd like to research,
and possibly was able to identify a woman whose photo I have who is
depicted in that viewmate photo. I was in touch her family, who have put
their tree on FTJP, and found a living relative of that family in Paris.
This is not the first time I've had a hit as a result of jewishgen, and I
again will contribute in some way to its continued operation.
Very truly yours,

Abraham ALTACHULAR? Nebraska 1930 #general

S. Harris <jewishgen@...>

A 1930 census-taker's poor handwriting leaves a question about
the identity of a man listed as living with Paul Benjamin BERNSTEIN and
Ben's wife, the former Helen GRINSPAN (of 32nd Street? 33rd Street?
Decatur?) in Omaha, Nebraska (Douglas County).

I am interested in the relationship (it might be step-father or
wife's father, though Helen's father's name was Mark GRINSPAN) of the
man, who appears to have been a 49-year-old widower, born in Nebraska of
German parents. The man's first name was definately Abraham. His last
name appears to be ALTACHULAR or something close to that.

Unfortunately, I don't have the entire record, so I don't have
the occupations of the men.

Thanks,
Stacy Harris

Chaim Donyachya[1840-1913] was one of the "twin rabbis" the other being my
GGGrandfather Menachem Mendl of Kopys.[1840-1920] There are many spellings
of Doniach -Don Yachya Danyakh etc. I have recently found some information
that a Chaim Danyakh was in Vyzuonus in 1892 with apparently two children
Leyba (Leib) which just about fits with my knowledge and another Gilel aged
16. I am trying to find out if this is in fact my GGGrandfather's twin and
two of his children. Can you help please? Is Gilel male or female? And does
anuone have additional information? My Chaim had two wives and some family
are now in Israel but we have lost touch.
Thanks in advance
Chag Sameach and a peaceful year to all.

Mt Wood Cemetery/Suicide #general

Connie Fisher Newhan

I have been trying to find information about my husband's ggf Jacob
Newhan/Neuhan who committed suicide in Wheeling, WVa in 1908. Newspaper
reports and obituary notices indicated that he was buried at Mt. Wood
Cemetery. I have never been able to find confirmation of this. Do you
think the fact that he was a suicide may cloud the picture? Could he be
in an unmarked area? Is it possible that as a suicide records were not
kept? I'm not sure how that fact may or may not affect burial records,
etc., but since I've had no luck thus far, I thought I'd explore that
possibility.
I be interested to hear your thoughts on the subject.

Thank you.

Research in Poland -- Power of Attorney #general

Daniel Kazez <dkazez@...>

Periodically, the question comes up "How can I have someone in Poland get a
copy of a document for me?" Part of the answer is often that you need to
give that "someone" limited power of attorney. I have recently made some
needed alterations to a bilingual power of attorney that I have used. In
case it might be useful, here is the document, in several different formats:

Try "html" or "doc" or "doc.zip" here--
http://www.kazez.com/~dan/power-of-attorney/

Polish speakers: Let me know if there are any errors in the document
above!

Everyone: I am just offering the document above. I am not offering Polish
research services nor do I have any recommendations to make in that arena.
