Kiev archive researcher #ukraine

Miriam Korshak <mkorshak@...>

I want to arrange the services of a local researcher in Kiev for a limited
project with a July 10 deadline.

Unfortunately, Miriam Weiner, of Routes to Roots, is unavailable because of
the time constraints.

I hope to make contact with anybody who's used or had dealings with any
local researcher working in the Kiev archives.

The assignment involves looking into birth records, voter lists, tax rolls,
etc for the name KORSHAK in Kiev Gubernia who lived in Kiev in the 19th
century, earliest known birth date 1853. The entire family began
emigrating in 1882, and were all in Chicago by 1902. They all gave their
place of origin simply "Kiev."

We specifically seek to verify the actual home place of origin, whether
what would be today's metro Kiev, or a town within the Kiev gubernia. We
have a family member living-working in Kiev who will make contact and
arrange specifics after we have identified a researcher. We will be
visiting Kiev July 10-31 this year, and hope to have some answers by then.

Can anybody in this List refer me to a name with an email address? or a
source with a list of names.

Thanks greatly!

Bavarian Matrikel #germany

Ronda McAllen

In 1813 Bavaria passed a law that required, among other things, that each
Jewish community had to maintain a list of all legally permitted Jewish
families who lived in that community. It was called the Matrikel. Is
anyone familiar with the Matrikel and if so, do they still exist today?

Ronda McAllen CITY ??? STATE ???? (required in future messages)

MODERATOR NOTE: You are asking about a very important source of information
for German Jewish genealogists. Some basic research will teach you a lot.
Good luck. MODERATOR

Burdin - Izmail research questions #ukraine

DAGAG123@...

Dear Genners,

My maternal grandfather was born in Izmail. I am trying to determine the best way
to obtain records of his birth 1900/ marriage 1929/divorce 1937. I just have
approximate years for. To further complicate matters, I do not have any "proof"
that he is my grandfather. My Mother's birth certificate was lost during the war
and her last name was changed when she was adopted by her stepfather. The
Ukrainian Consulate hasn't been very helpful.

Any and all advice will be very much appreciated,
Best wishes and Shabbat Shalom,

Help needed in Johannesburg S.A. #general

Dear Genners in Johannesburg,
It seems that I finally managed to locate an elderly
3rd cousin of my late mother. The lady was born in
Germany before WW1 and she is still listed in the
Johannesburg telephone directory, alas there is no
answer >from her phone.It is not surprising,considering
her age.She lives in Majestic Gate,Empire Road,
Parktown,Johannesburg.
My senses tell me that the best way will be to call
the Majestic Gate building. However, I am not sure that
a direct call >from Jerusalem with the "strange"
questions I have to ask will be productive. Is there a
Genner in Johannesburg who is willing to place a local
call and find >from the Majestic Gate manager the
whereabouts of the lady or a contact telephone of her
children?
Please email me privately and I'll supply the name and
some more details.
Thanks

Hello Abraham and all,

You will find an excellent source for most common words in many languages at the
Mormons site:

The Polish months, weekdays and numbers dictionary can be found at:

On several birth records I've received >from AGAD, the birth month is written
in Polish. Since I do not read Polish, can anyone tell me where I might
find a translation of each month in English to its corresponding month in
Polish.

It means: "manufacturer of carbonated water"

(wtwo'rca wo'd gazowych), where o' is an "o" with a kind of "accent aigue"
over it.

that is, what used to be called "selzer water"

Yes, that is what it says is the house number and street

polish jews compensation #general

Marilyn Hoffman <qofhearts2002@...>

Is there a list of names for Polish Jews who have
registered for compensation of property and businesses
seized during the war? I know there are offices taking
applications but I have not seen any lists like the
German and Swiss have.
I am searching for a missing family member and I
thought this may be a good way to trace her.
