Hazanjo <hazanjo@...>

from what was said to me yesterday, any FOIA request sent to another office
which is a genealogy request will ultimately be sent to the Missouri office.
I sent all of my requests to USCIS Records Unit in Arlington, VA, but so far
they've all been transferred to Missouri. If you're uncertain, call them
(816-350-5570).

Thanks for sharing this, Hazel. But could you clarify? (Or could
someone else clarify, if they know the answer to my question below?)

Does this refer to FOIA requests previously sent to INS?
Or is it for any genealogy-related FOIA request, regardless of the U.S.
government office involved?

Hi,

I don't know what does Rosanne means by international sources.

If any one of the members on the list write to its minister of foreign
affairs and its ambassador in Romania to protest to the Romanian
authorities then there's a chance that something will move.
The more protest they get the more likely they are to reverse the
decision.

IMHO

Adam Yamey <adamandlopa@...>

Hans J MORGENTHAU (Coburg 1904 - USA 1980) was the son
of Dr Ludwig MORGENTHAU and his wife Frieda, born
BACHMANN. Hans J was an important political scientist,
and also distantly related to me.

Did he marry? Did he have any children?

Can anyone provide me with more information about the
MORGENTHAU(of Coburg, I presume) and BACHMANN(of Munich) families?

BONDI in Dresden 1700s #germany

Jan Bousse <janbousse@...>

I was intrigued by the mention of the name BONDI, BONDIA as variationS of the
name Yom Tov or JONTOV: "Kaganoff... noting...that the Hebrew Yom Tov
became Bondi and Bondia in France and Italy" (gersig May 25, 2004). This
seems logical, since BONDI and BONDIA sound like Ladino and would indeed
mean "good day". Would that denote a Sephardic origin of such families?

In fact I had seen the name in Dresden. In my search for the KASKELE bankers
in Dresden and the possible link between them and Henry CERF or Hirsch Levi,
I obtained >from the Saechsisches Hauptstaatsarchiv in Dresden several
lengthy lists and documents related to the established Jewish families in
Dresden in the second half of the 18th century. Most prominent is the BONDI
family. There are several in the list of tombs, the oldest is: BONDI, Isaac,
Hebrew name Jizchak Bondi ben Shimon Bondi, b. 1689/90, d. 25.03.1754.

Most interesting is in the list of Elders (Aeltesten der hiesigen
Judenschaft): Salomon Isaac BONDI. The list is dated 26 March 1775. In the
list of the Jewish families there is Salomon Simon BONDI. In another list of
Jewish families, dated 30 June 1773 the first name is Hoffactorin Bondi or
Bondea (not quite clear to read).

My question again, would that mean that the BONDI family was Sephardic and
came >from elsewhere, earlier? As I said, my search is mainly for KASKELE and
especially for the eldest son Jacob Judah KASKELE. He seems to have died
relatively young, perhaps 28 or 29 years old and I have not found any
mention of his place of death. A KASKEL, Jacob jr., 28 yr., late of Dresden,
appears in a list of members of the United City Lodge in London on 29 Jan.
1787. On the same list, on 24 Nov. 1785, is the name of Henry CERF, no
particulars. These two people must therefore have known each other and I am
exploring the possibility that there was a business link between them. I am
theorising that Henry CERF was in fact HIRSCH LEVI, who before 1771, then
aged 18, went to live in Dresden >from his native Liebenwalde. Did he change
his name HIRSCH into a Sephardic sounding CERF in Dresden under the
influence of the BONDI family? Was he sent to London by Bondi or by Kaskele?
These are the questions I am trying to solve. Perhaps some of you can give
me information or hints. I will of course with pleasure give information on
the names I have on these documents >from Dresden. Kind regards,

Jan Bousse, Oostende, Belgium <janbousse@...>

Latvia SIG #Latvia Occupation of Riga during World War 1 #latvia

George Mason <gmason3815@...>

As part of trying to understand what my NATHANSON ancestors may have
experienced, I am attempting to learn more about Riga during the First
World War. I am assuming the occupation must have been between 1915
and 1918. For example, I understand that on September 1, 1917, there
was an attack by the German Eighth Army against the Russian Twelfth
Army that took place around Riga and involved some 575 pieces of
artillery across a 4,600 yard front.

I've tried a Google search and the information on occupied Riga is
rather sparse. Can anyone provide an overview of the occupation or
websites that have more information about this time? I hope this
isn't too far off-topic.

Thanks,
George Mason

Yiddish Theatre and Vadeville #YiddishTheatre Looking for an Actor and The Good Earth #yiddish

David Harris <dorsharris@...>

In an earlier message to the YT&V group, Bernie Levy was seeking
information about his grandfather, Morris KAUDERER, who may have acted
under the stage name Maurice KONRAD. Mr. Levy also thought that his
grandfather may have had some involvement with the play "The Good Earth".

On September 25, 1932, the New York Times reported that the new play, "The
Good Earth", was having a pre-Broadway tryout in Philadelphia. It goes on
to say that the Theater Guild production was being presented at the
Chestnut Street Opera House. Except for its star, Ms. Alla Nazimova, no
other cast members are mentioned. However, it did state that it had a cast
of about 40 members. The show opened on Broadway in October 1932 and a
listing of the New York cast does not include anyone with a name remotely
similar to Morris Konrad (there was a Conrad Cantzen).

Since Bernie Levy's message mentioned his grandfather was an optometrist in
Philadelphia >from 1916 to 1954, it's possible he participated in the
Philadelphia tryout prior to the show opening in New York. I would suggest
two sources to check for names of the cast; Philadelphia newspapers
(including the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin) and Variety Magazine. Both
probably had some review or reference to the Philadelphia performances.
The weekly Variety Magazine for the 1932 period is available on microfilm.

Yiddish Theatre and Vadeville #YiddishTheatre My grandfather the Yiddish actor (?) #yiddish

Bernie Levy <bernie-levy@...>

My grandfather was supposedly involved in Yiddish Theatre, according to
my mother and one of her sisters, but they don't seem to have much in
the way of confirmed or specific information.

His name as we know it was Morris Frank KAUDERER, born in Bukowina area
of Austria-Hungarian empire in 1889. He was one of five children of
Benyumin (Benjamin) Kauderer and Yetta THAU and also had 5 half-siblings
from his father's second wife. He probably came to the U.S. somewhere
between 1907 and 1911 and was married in 1911 in New York to my
grandmother Pauline BURG, also >from Bukowina.

His career was as an Optometrist (as were many others in his generation
of the family and later) in Philadelphia, PA >from 1916 until he died in
1954.

The information that I have gotten about his possible Yiddish Theatre
involvement was that he may have acted under the name Maurice KONRAD
(CONRAD) or Maurice Frank K(C)onrad. He may have worked with or in the
same period as Paul Muni and may have had something to do with the play
"The Good Earth". I don't know if this was in Europe or NYC or exactly
in what years.

I perused volume I of "The Lexicon of Yiddish Theatre" (in Yiddish,
borrowed >from a friend) and also searched an index of all or most of the
volumes which is on the Internet, and also spoke with the woman who is
president of the Hebrew Actors Union recently, but have come up with no
further information.

Does anyone have any further ways I can research this or know of
specific information? I just found out about this "discussion group" or
list-serve. Are there archives that can be searched? Thank you.
