Dear Martha,

It occurs to me that if you can't find any Census traces of the family that
you knew was there, that they might have been using some other surname. Is
this possible?

Alternately, I would be looking for N.H> City Directories for those years
although I don't know how you would get them in Israel. Here, they are
available in big city and University Libraries and of course the Library of
VCongress and they are also available thru the Mormon Family History
Libraries.

There is also a book called The Jews in New Haven, a publication of the
Jewish Historical Society of New Haven 1978, which Society you might also
contact. This info >from Hal Bookbinder and Joan Rimmon's listing of North
American Community Books >from the Syllabus of the J G Seminar for the 2000
Seminar which has now been transferred to the iajgs.org site and additional
books have been added.

If you know their Synagogue you could contact them also. Maybe somebody
made a history of the Synagogue.

Just some thoughts.

I am also looking for two more surnames. My husband's fathers last name was
HOLLANDER. He came >from Gorlice in Poland. He and his brother Meir(Mayer)
survived the concentration camps. His fathers name was Herman(Hershel,Yakov
Tzvi). My husbands aunts names were Sara Esther and Chava. His grandparents were
Avaraham Baruch and Hendel. We know they all perished in the holocaust one
of the Aunts was engaged. We are looking for any surviving relatives. My
husband's mothers maiden name was RESNICK. We think her family came >from Poland.
Her mother's name was Chana Shana(Anna Jane). Her father's name we think was
Harry. Harry was married before he married Anna and we believe after he
married Anna. We know he tried to communicate with my husband's motehr
Shirley(Sara) but the divorce was very bitter and Anna wouldn't give her her
fathers letters. We are looking for any half siblings of Shirley and any other
relatives.

Try looking at free indexes for the census at USGENWEB. Also, you can try
accessing NCLive through one of the local libraries and look through the
available census images there.

Think about handwriting and how the letters maybe read incorrectly. Gerber
could be Genben, Genber, Gerben, Gerler, Gerlaer, Gerlaen, Genler, Genlen,
Gerlen, Genlaen, Cerber, Cerben, Cenber, Cerler, Cerlaer, Cerlen, Cerlaen,
Cenlaen, Cenlaer. Then look at your keyboard and see which letters are close
to the letters GERBER and fill those in, this way you cover typos as well.
For example "G" could have been typed as R, T, Y, F, H, V, B, or N.

Since the original message concerned Chicago, it might
be helpful to mention that Chicago renumbered their
streets in 1909.

In Rich's case, if he was using a known address >from prior
to 1909, then tried to find that address in the 1910 census,
that might account for the missing address.

Unfortunately, Like Rich, I also think there were a few census
takers who were less than diligent.....
