I fully support Allan Hirsh's proposal to obtain copies of the Stuttgart
family register sheets and digitize them to place online, and pledge $500 toward
the cost of having photocopies made, should the project prove feasible..

With the recent growth of this list, there may be enough members familiar
with 19th century German handwriting so that the work could be spread out among
a substantial number of volunteers, and people who couldn't commit a large
amount of time might be encouraged to transcribe a few sheets each.

REST Surname #france

I have recently joined this SIG in researching a possible French link
to the REST surname.

According to family lore, the REST family is Sephardic in origin,
ultimately landing in Plunge, Lithuania in the 1600s. The REST surname
is unique to that area, and we have been trying to determine its
origins. It is quite possible that it comes >from the German-- since
at the time of surname acquisition in Lithuania, at least one member of
this family was an inn keeper-- the word "rest" apparently means the
same in English as in German and this might correspond to the
innkeeping profession.

However, it is my understanding that some Jews, upon expulsion >from
Spain/Portugal came to southwest of France. My internet searching led
me to find quite a lot of REST and Le REST families in Bretagne,
Finestere, Plougham (as well as some other areas) of France.

My question to this SIG is, how might I begin to research the origins
of the REST surname in these areas? Does anyone know--is this a common
name in French, and should I just give this search a "rest"? (pun
intended!)

R’ Joseph Zeev MAMJOFFE was the last Rabbi of Mazeikiai until he was
murdered in August 1941 with all the Jewish community of Mazeikiai.

I have read that the meaning of the surname MAMJOFFE is M”M Joffe. M’M means
“Mimishpachat Mordechai “ – >from Mordechai’s family, meaning >from Rabbi
Mordechai Jaffe, author of “Baal Halevush”.

Can someone confirm it or is there another explanation.

Hello:

Can you read Hebrew? Then maybe you can help connect two
big branches of the Gelbfish/Gelbfisz family!

I have just posted on ViewMate - at JewishGen - three
pages of reminiscences (or maybe just family history) that
were written down (very neatly, in Hebrew) by Binyamin
(Bainish) Ben Menachem (family name changed >from
Gelbfish), born 1901 Warsaw, passed away 1994 or 1995 in
Haifa.

I've been told by his nephew that Bainish recalled meeting
- while a child in Warsaw - my grandfather (or maybe even
great-grandfather!) ... and that he knew the names of his
own ancestors back to the early 19th century - who
(according to Bainish's recollection) would also have been
my own ancestors.

So you can understand my anticipation at getting - if
someone is so kind - a word-for-word translation of the
document. (By the way, the document would also tell us
the names of the great- and gg-grandfather of my
great-uncle Schmuel Gelbfisz, who changed his name to Sam
Goldwyn and had some success in the movie business!)

Dear Genners,
This message is intended for the new Genners since I
posted a similar request in the past.
I am researching my maternal family KOENIGSBUCH. About
2 years ago I found by sheer chance that my mother had
3rd cousin in Hamurg whose name was Aron/Adolf
Koenigsbuch(1896-1942).He was married to Elizabeth von
der Walde. Both perished in Lodz Ghetto.
They had 2 boys Rolf Simon Koenigsbuch(b.1929) and
Kurt Max Koenigsbuch (b.1931).Both were on the
Kindertransport and are most probably alive.I know
that Rolf Simon K. lived in New Jersey in the late
1960s and that Kurt Max changed his name to Max
Harprer and lived in Toronto in the 1960s. None are
members of the Kindertransport association and did not
participate in the Reunions. Both joined the British
Army in the late 1940s-early 1950s and were stationed
in Korea and Malaya.Rolf Simon submitted in 1954 a
testimony to the Wiener Library in London.
I do not manage to track them down.They are not in the
SSDI which is a positive sign.
I was in contact with the Association of Jewish
Refugees in London and the Hamburg State Archives.
Both provided as much info as possible until the
1960s.Ever since-nothing.
Does any one know about them.In the PRO in Kew Gardens
they mentioned that they had a relaive by the name of
Kate Kutznitzky who lived in the 1940s in London.
Perhaps someone knows about this lady. The spelling
might be Kuznitzky.

search to "Krupa", I found the Polish website <http://www.krupa.pl> of a
real-estate company, and also two websites devoted to an extremely luscious
young woman named Joanna Krupa, who was born in Poland. And other pages for
a Polish-born photographer named Oleg Krupa, among others.

That, I think, is as close as one can come on a Jewish genealogical site to
a definitive answer to your question. As you can see, much information can
be gleaned >from just a few seconds with Google.

Ellis Island manifest question #general

I'm curious about some writing which appears on a ship manifest for an Ellis
Island arrival. My first cousin three times removed came back into the U.S.
in 1920 on the Imperator. (He had returned to Austria-Hungary to find a
"proper" Jewish girl -- one who wouldn't talk back to him! Apparently,
though, while he did get married over there, he did not achieve his primary
goal of finding a meek wife!) Anyway, there is some handwriting on the
manifest that I can't fully read but don't understand in any event.

My cousin is Max Stern, line 8, and his wife is Fanny, line 9. Can anyone
tell me what the handwriting means?
