Rabbi Georg WILDE obituary #germany

Irene Newhouse <einew@...>

My granduncle, Rabbi Dr. Georg Wilde, Rabbi in Magdeburg for almost 30
years, to 1938, died in England on April 9, 1949. I think he may have had
an obituary in the "Association of Jewish Refugees Information", to which I
don't have access. Is there someone who has access to this publication and
is willing to find this obituary for me?

You won't just be helping me - the Centrum Judaicum in Berlin is trying to
compile biographies of all the Rabbis who served in the field in World War
I. Dr. Wilde was a Field Rabbi. Thanks!

Unidentified place name in Hebrew inscription #germany

Bernhard Purin <bernhard_purin@...>

Unidentified place name

I'm just working on the Hebrew inscription of a brass hanukkah lamp but
I did not succeed in identifying the place name. The insription read as below:

"Belongs to the Hewrah kaddisha of the Holy Community of (...)
in the year 400 (1640)"

The Hebrew name of the place reads:

shin / resh / he / alef / nun / waw / waw / yud / lamed

I checked several sources like "ShtetlSeeker" but couldn't find any
place name with a similar spelling. The end of the place's name "...wil"
could refer to Southwest Germany, Alsace or Switzerland but any attempts
to identify this place were without success.

On the base of the lamp the members of the hewrah are listed:

Zew bar Eliezer Segal
Eliezer bar Abraham
Chaim bar Abraham
Menachem bar Zwi Segal
Sina bar Eliahu
Nachshu (?) bar Schmuel
Eli bar Abraham Schatz
Moshe bar (?)
Itzchak bar Moshe Segal
Simaon bar Nathan
Arie bar (?) Katz
Simon bar Yonah Segal
Jitzchak bar Eli

Any suggestions regarding the place name are highly welcome!

Hungarian translation - tombstone #hungary

Laura Ma'oz <pedocare@...>

I just posted to Viewmate a photo of a tombstone written in Hebrew and
Hungarian. The Hebrew is clearly Chaya, daughter of Tzvi. The Hungarian
gives what appears to be two totally different names. Can anyone tell me how
these names relate to Chaya? I assume that at least one of the names is
Chaya's Hungarian name. This is for the JOWBR project. Thanks for any help
you can give me.

guide/translator in Kosice in Agust #hungary

Rakoff125

I have tried, unsuccessfully, to reach Marta Gyoriova, head of the Kosice
branch of
The Association of Jewish Women in Slovakia. She had been helpful to a
fellow genner in the past and I was hoping she could connect me with a
translator/assistant/guide for my research there this August. Several attempts at online
email addresses have gone unanswered.

Can anyone please recommend a contact person that I can E-MAIL to make
arrangements before I get there? I have a lot of research to do and graves to
visit and I know I will need help accomplishing this.
thanks.......

Lithuania- Jewish Renaissance special issue #general

Saul Issroff <saul@...>

The next issue of Jewish Renaissance, a high grade quarterly published in
England, is focussed on Lithuania. It is packed with articles about
contemporary Lithuania and other interesting material e.g. on travel and
genealogical research .

Forthcoming issues will focus on Jews in Cuba, Morocco, Turkey and the West
of England.

They do not normally send single copies but the editor has agreed to send
the Lithuania issue free of charge (special deal for genealogists) if a
subscription for four issues is taken out at $46 for four issues. (UK- £18),
Europe £20-50). Another alternative is a cheaper .pdf edition which will be
emailed for the lower
cost of $32 for four issues. Refer to the website:

Although the full form of a patronymic ending is -ovich, I have found that
in the Vedemosti >from which these lists are transcribed, probably to save
space, the final -ich was typically left off all the patronymics.

Given name Keiller or Caila? #general

Ury Link

Dear Genners,
Myra Waddell asked:
>>I have recently discovered that my great-grandmother's given name is
Keiller or Caila - I have two different spellings. She either came >from Irkutsk in
Siberia or >from the Lomza Province. Does anyone recognise this name or have
any idea what the correct spelling would be?
Myra Waddell. (Adelaide, South Australia)<<<<

My answer is, This women name is a very old Jewish-German name >from the
Middle ages. dr Siegmund Salfeld in his book "Das Martyrologium des
Nurnberger Memorbuches", Berlin 1898 verlag Simion, mention this name few
times in 1298 as Cyla ( Kaf - Yud - Lamed - Alef ) and in the same year
in another place in Germany as Kyla ( Kuf - Yud - Lamed - Alef ) . In
German he give the spelling as Kaila and Keyla. Salfeld give few
reference to the name as a old German name that get out >from the names
Gela, Gele and Kela. Geil or Keil mean in old German a women that is
cheerful, luxurious, reckless and vulgar . Another explanation is that it get
out >from the name Gele what is a diminutive of the name Gertrud (Duden
,Lexicon der vornamen ,Manheim 2004).

I have another explanation , that this name get out >from the Hebrew name
Chaya. In Easteren Europe we see that >from Chaya we get Chayalle and them
Kayalle, Kayle and Kyla. It can be that the sources are different in
Germany then In Russia or Poland.
