Express JRI orders #general

Mona Freedman Morris <mona_morris2@...>

I used JRI Express to order a marriage record >from Bialystok. The service
is incredible. I couldn't get through on the fax number so I used snail
mail and still received the correct record in 7 days. The clarity was
wonderful and came in .JPG e-mail. Mark Halpern and Stanley Diamond have
done it again. Now, if we can only find a way to translate those Cyrillic
Russian documents it would be perfect.

Error in George Arnstein's German Genealogical Resources. #germany

Joseph Fibel <jfibel@...>

Dear Sig,
There is a very serious error in the above file which I have seen before
but somehow neglected to bring up.

The file describes the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish
People (CAHJP) and indicates that this is abbreviated as Yad VaShem. I
think that if Hadassah Assouline had seen this she would have had an
absolute fit. Hadassah has been serving the CAHJP and all of Jewish
Genealogy for a great many years and is in herself an important Jewish
Resource. As any knows who has utilized the records of both
organizations, they are completely separate and even have a different
orientation.

Of course, Yad VaSHem is directed to document the Holocaust including the
years growing up to it and the subsequent years, as well, while the CAHJP
has been collecting community records of Jewish Life throughout the world
>from long before YadVaShem was founded.

I certainly hope that someone with the authority to do so makes the
necessary correction.

Dear Joel,

Regarding the exact date when the Rabbi of Nowy Targ passed away, did
you check the Jewish records? Did you try to find the paper "Machzike
Hadass"? This weekly was published in Cracow by Rabbi Shimon Sofer
(the son of the Chasam Sofer of Pressburg).

more information on new Gedenkbuch #germany

Renee Steinig <rsteinig@...>

Yesterday I posted a message here about a JTA (jta.org) report that Germany
just published a new, expanded list of its citizens who were killed in the
Holocaust" and wondered if this new publication is the long awaited update
of the Gedenkbuch. It does seem to be.

A press release >from the Deutsche Presse-Agentur, which appears on the web
site of Boston's Combined Jewish Philanthropies

www.cjp.org/content_display.html?ArticleID=183297

contains additional information on the four-volume book, which was compiled
by Germany's Federal Archives and introduced at a ceremony at Berlin's New
Synagogue on Monday.

The article also mentions that a computer database of Jews in Germany, based
on a 1939 census, can be consulted at the New Synagogue, and that the
Archives is working to compile list of all Jews living in Germany 1933-1945.

I have no information beyond what's in the article online. Renee
