WIEDER fm Borsa, Maramures #hungary

While reviewing lists of names >from the Hungarian Labor Battalions, I
found a WIEDER Pinhasz b. 1900 Borsa, Maramaros, son of Cipora
KAHAN. My grandfather Chaim KAHAN, who was born in Sziget,
Maramaros, in 1869 had a sister named Cipora (Czipre) b. Sziget
1862. If you have any information about this family please let me know.

Major east coast port of entry besides NY was Baltimore, but many also
landed in Boston, and further south as well. And of course some went to
Canada. In my family, there is a story that they were supposed to land in
NY (per tickets) but the ship's captain was paid more to land the ship in
Baltimore. My non-English speaking ggm and her young children got off in
Baltimore not having a clue where they were and had to make connections to
get to Pittsburgh whereas the original arrangements had been >from NY.

Folks,

Does anyone know of an east coast US point of entry, other than Ellis
Island?

I searched the The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation
<http://www.ellisisland.org/> (SOLEIF) WEB site
(http://www.ellisisland.org/) for my mother's family. Their names on
arrival would have been:

father David Sicherman
mother Vera Sicherman
sister Ilus Sicherman [later married Mati Hirsch]
brother Dezsö Sicherman

All of these people (based what my mother told me) would have arrived
together. As my mother told the story they left what was Fiume, Italy
(Wikipedia <http://en.wikipedia.org/> (http://en.wikipedia.org/) tells
me it is now Rijeka, Croatia.) (Heading, I believe for New York City.)
They immigrated in either 1937 or 1938. (After my mother turned 21 and
before WWII started.)

The SOLEIF database does not have any records for these people.

P.S. Her other brother, Myksa, chose to go to Palestine. I believe he
married and had a child, Ryfka, while there. He joined the rest family
some time later.

Success - Luis Kraidberg of NY/Russia Naturalization Records Found #general

L. Altman <familysearch@...>

Thanks to this list for helping me locate my great grandfathers
naturalization records. Never give up your search! I have spent the better
part of 5 years trying to track down my great-grandfather's immigration
information. I have found this information (happy dance...). I would like to
share with you how I accomplished this as I used mostly online resources and
I believe it would be of interest to many on this list. Here is a summary of
what transpired:

Background information, and my starting point. Luis KRAIDBERG (one of many
variations of this surname) is my great-grandfather. He was >from somewhere
in Russia and I had no idea of how the surname was spelled over there.
Census records were finally found through an online service and in every
census he is listed as being an alien (including the 1930 census). I also
located his WWI draft registration cards (he filled out 2) using the same
online service and he is listed correctly as an alien. I also have his
marriage record and some of his children's birth records.

The search - the same online service shows a Declaration of Intent in
Manhattan (New York City) based on the card file at Chambers St. I had a
researcher go to look this up for me at Chambers Street, Old Records
Division, and using the volume # and page # given on the website the
declaration of intent was not able to be located. The researcher also
searched many other pages. I asked the list for help and received many
different responses. I am not local to NY, I live in North Carolina (about
600 miles away). At the suggestion of one of the members of this list I
checked out the Bronx County Naturalization Records available online at the
German Genealogy Group's website. There he was, listed in the Petitions for
Naturalization database, with just a petition number. No declaration number
and no volume or page info for the petition. Using their request form
available online at their website, I mailed in a request to the Bronx County
Clerk's Office, Naturalization Records, 851 Grand Concourse, Rm. 118, Bronx
NY 10451. Payment is required with this form and in about a week after
sending it I received his declaration of intent and his approved petition
for naturalization!! I may not have found him without the suggestion of a
list member. Thanks again to everyone who has helped me with this search.

In addition to the other sources of information already mentioned, the
Passenger List filed with the US authorities will show the date of departure
from Glasgow. these lists are preserved in microfilm through the US
National Archives and copies of those films are available through the Mormon
Family History Centers. I understand that you are in Israel and have no
direct access to Family History Centers in that country, you may gain access
if you visit another country or have a friend do a look-up for you

How/where might I find the book that this information came from?

I author a Jewish history of Broward County (FL) website
http://www.jgsbroward.org/ and this item appears to have been incorrectly
cited..

"The '30s is a difficult time for Jews in Fort Lauderdale, which has an
"Anti-Semitic reputation". Many hotels are "restricted" forcing Jewish
travelers and tourists to go south to hotels in Hollywood or the Miami area.
Henry Morgenthau, Secretary of the Treasury under FDR, comes here on Coast
Guard business. He is told the hotel would accept him, but not Jewish staff
members. He refuses to stay in Ft. Lauderdale and finds accommodations
outside the city limits."
