Viewmate 9890 - Help requested for Kiev Gubernia location from manifest #general

Cheryl Freeman

After 10 years of searching, I have found my grandfather's family on a
passenger manifest at the Ellis Island website.

I am asking for help with information found in the "Name and complete
address of nearest relative or friend in country whence alien came" column.
The first word likely refers to Berdichev, and I assume that Kievskaja gid.
refers to Kiev Gubernia. The middle word is unrecognizable and does not
seem to match any of the oblasts.

I will be most grateful if anyone can take a look and help me with address
information. If you can help, please reply directly to me at my address,
Cheryl@genattic.com. The image is at:

Seeking descendants of Simon ZENWIRT (Canada?) #general

Sam&Pauline <pns2@...>

I am looking for descendants of Simon Zenwirt. Last known address was in
Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
His wife was nee Sandezer originally >from Lukowica, Poland. I think he had
a nephew also originally >from the same town by the name of Salomon Sandler.
By researching YAD Vashem, I noticed Simon's page of testimony relating to
Chaim Sandezer murdered in the Holocaust . My mothers maiden name was Rywka
Tonia Sandezer also >from Lukowica who died in Auschwitz after being deported
from Belgium where she emigrated in 1926. Sol Sandler was also originally
Sol Sandezer and changed his name when he came to Palestine. My mothers had
also two sisters in Belgium, Rosie and Sala, born in Lukowica. They were
also deported with their children and murdered in Auschwitz. I am a Child
Holocaust survivor who was lucky to survive as well as my father. My name is
Samuel Rubin.now living in the United States. I am simply anxious to locate
the dwindling names of my family on my mother's side as Simon could be my
uncle by marriage.Sol Sandler was my cousin. Please respond directly to me.
Thanking you in advance,

researching surname BRILLIANT #general

roger <roger@...>

Dear Genners,
Whilst being comparatively new to JewishGen, I have seen in the
archives, a few people who have researched the surname BRILLIANT.
I wondered if, during their research, they had come across any
information on my ancestors who's surname was BRYLANT? They lived in
Plock during the first half of the 19th century. There was Leybus, who
was my great grandfather, then his sons, Joseph, Robin and Julius (my
grandfather) who changed their surname to Brilliant when they came to
England during the second half of the 19th century.
If anyone is able to help in anyway I would welcome them contacting me
via my own e-mail address.
Thank you in advance
Roger Brilliant

shidduch networks #germany

Ralph Bloch <rablo07@...>

Adam Yamey and I were discussing marriage patterns he found while
transcribing Ichenhausen marriage records (http://jgbs.org).

Long before the advent of railways, marriageable young people from
Ichenhausen (and other Swabian communities) found partners in specific
Jewish communities of Baden, Wuertemberg and the Palatinates, hundreds of
miles away.

Travel, phone and internet can be safely ruled out as courting venues. This
raises the question: did formal or informal shadchanut networks exist
between distant Jewish communities in the 18th and 19th century? How would
they have communicated? Does anyone know about literature on this topic?

Where Did the BERMANN'S Come From? #germany

Steve Orlen

Dear Cousins,
I've been working on my mother-in-law's BERMANN family tree & every
once in a while she'll ask if I've found out where they came >from
before they lived in Germany. I tell her No, I'll probably never
found out. She tells me she thinks they were originally Sephardic,
from Spain. Her BERMANN's can be traced back to circa 1774, living in
Zell on the Mosel, and in other towns in that vicinity.

I wish I could answer her question, or at least offer a speculative
historical time-line. My question is: does anyone know the history of
Sephardic exiles in Germany?

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>

For those of you who are researching the Jews of Ireland, a book came out in
2006 which might be of help in your studies. It is called "Jewish Ireland
in the Age of Joyce: A Socioeconomic History" by Cormac O'Grada. It covers
the approximate era of 1870-1940.

An excerpt of the book can be found at:
