Book "When Scotland was Jewish" #dna

Glenn J. Hill

Hi everyone, this is my first time posting here, and I was wondering
if anyone had read the book "When Scotland was Jewish"? I have not
done so, and I am wary of possible wild stuff, but do not want to
throw out the possible fluff with what might be of actual interest!
:-)

And I was wondering if anyone has thoughts on if there is any
historic factual and especially DNA factual bases for the book??

The reason I am wondering is that I have my Mother's direct line
traced back to Scotland, and in my mtDNA test results, I match up
with about 85 others of known Jewish ancestry. I have indeed found
a number of branches of my female line to go back to England, to
families who were known to be of converso or crypto-Jewish origins.
At several points in the 1700 and 1600s I have two female ancestors
in this line who were Jewish, named Gunn and Anthony, but I am
wondering if the matches in my mtDNA were >from these women or from
way back further, to the early 1600s in Scotland or before?

I have read some references to Jewish refugees fleeing England in
the 1200s, going north to Scotland, and then blending into the
Scottish communities as crypto-Jews. Does anyone know of more
factual research into this history? My mtDNA haplogroup is H4, which
is fairly rare. Here is the description >from Family Tree DNA`s site:

"H4 is an uncommon branch and is found at low frequencies in both
Europe and the Near East. Further research will better resolve the
distribution and historical characteristics of this haplogroup."

Does anyone have any information as to H4 being of Jewish ancestry?
And if so, how often?

Thanks!
Glenn Hill

DREYFUS, MEYER, KAHN Families in ALSACE, PARIS & NY #france

Juliet

Hi
I am looking for information about my maternal grandmother's family.

My grandmother was Viviane DREYFUS Stamper Paradise and she was born 1912.
Her parent's were Julius DREYFUS and Renee MEYER and she had one sister Evelyn.

Julius' parents were Samuel DREYFUS and Henriette KAHN. Julius had one
sister, Palmyre. This was Samuel's 2nd marriage. His first had been
to Caroline WEIL, with whom he had two children, Ralph and Reine
DREYFUS .
Samuel's parents were Meyer DREYFUS and Rosalie KAHN.

Renee Meyer's parents were Theodore and Florence MEYER.
Renee had one sister, Palmyre who married Maurice DREYFUS and they had
two children, Raymond and Didier.

I believe Renee MEYER was the only one of her family to immigrate to
the United States. I do think they might have left Alsace to live in
Paris.
I believe that Julius DREYFUS family also stayed in France.

My grandmother gave me this history late in her life and I am not sure
if there are mistakes and if so how many.

I am looking for any information anyone might have about this family.

Thanks,
Juliet Stamper

POMPEL in Krakes {was: Pampel Dutch Name} #general

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

In the previous posting on this subject, I had noted how the name PAMPERL
PAMPERLE in Bohemia in 1793 appears as POMPERLE in the earlier Familiant
records. The lead me naturally to think of the possibility of POMPEL as a
variant of PAMPEL as a family name. It was Malcolm Katz >from the UK who was
looking for data on the PAMPEL name, which has been traced to an Amsterdam
family family: http://hzrabbie.home.comcast.net/

But was it also a first name and then a patronymic?

I found this: http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/krakes/krakjews.htm

You will see the shopkeeper in Krakes, Lithuania called POMPEL [House 43 in
Vilniaus Street]. Now hopefully someone may have some knowledge of POMPEL
PAMPEL PAMPERL as a given name. This could have a bearing on the origin of the
family names PAMPEL [Amsterdam] and PAMPERL/PAMPERLE [Bohemia] and POMPEL
[Krakes].

Could they all have the same roots?

On the PAMPEL family tree site, there is a reference to a Bohemian family that
moved to to Amsterdam about 1754 when the Empress Maria Theresa expelled the
Jews and took the name van PRAAG. This bears out what I said about migration
from Bohemia to Holland in that era.

Welcome to new members and greetings to Conference attendees #germany

JewishGen German Research Division Coordinator

After being stable for some time our membership list has been adding
new names almost daily recently. I hope that some of our new member /
subscribers learned about GerSIG at the IAJGS Conference and are
enjoying the meeting.

I am unable to attend the Conference this year because of pressing
business obligations but I'm with all attending GerSIG members in
spirit. It was at the 1998 Conference, my first, that GerSIG
was created and that I met many JewishGen email friends in person
for the first time.

Established GerSIG members - please encourage researchers you meet who
have German ancestors to subscribe to our SIG.

New subscribers - Please save the "Welcome / Introduction" letter you
get >from our listserv system when you subscribe. That document
contains much helpful information and you will probably want to refer
back to it often.

Wishing all in Salt Lake City an enjoyable and productive meeting.

Dear GerSiggers,

I'd like to thank ALL of you who replied to my plight, and especially
those of you who also sent the link to Bad Salzuflen. The translation is
"Salzuflen 1917". It certainly fits, because on a Google Map it's almost
midway between Essen, where my grandparents lived, after their marriage
in 1900, and Hannover, where they moved either just before of just after
my gf, Louis REHFISCH returned >from active duty in the German Army
during WWI..
Again, many thanks for your very rapid and helpful replies.

b. 1885 d. 1886, Pinkhas b. 1887 d. 1941, and Sane b. 1889 d. ?).

Isak Leib (my great grandfather), his sister Kreindel and their
half-brother Wolf emigrated to the US (New York). Dawid and Moses
Leib died as infants in Jaroslaw.

Pinkhas RUTHE married Rachela KLEINBERGER b. 1894 in Krakow d. 1942

that Pinkhas at some point relocated to Krakow and that in 1932-33
he and Rachela owned a fruit shop located at Starowislna 20 in
Krakow. They perished in the Holocaust as evidenced by the pages of
testimony their daughter Miriam FILER provided in 1956 as a survivor.

Sane married Ruda RUTTE b. 1894 (parents Simon Mendel RUTTE and
Chaije Rifka LEHRER) in 1921 in Jaroslaw. They had at least 3
children -- Anna b. 1922, Henryk b. 1924 and Samson b. 1926.

I am looking for living descendants and/or family of Pinkhas and
Sane MOHRENBERG r RUTHE. Miriam FILER's Yad Vashem pages of testimony
do not say where she was located in 1956. I am hoping that she or her
descendants can contact me.

I do not know what became of Sane and his family, but I do know that
I cannot find any pages of testimony for them (I pray they survived).

Would anyone with any information please contact me privately. I
appreciate your help.
