Aharon SHENHAR:in-law of Reb' Chaim of Volozhin? #general

Yonatan Ben-Ari

I found a note written by a deceased distant relative of mine stating:

Harav (Hagaon Hatzadik) R' Avraham SHENKAR z"l , born in Slabodka, to
his father Aharon, son-in-law of Reb. Chaim of Volozhin.

The note was written by a cousin who dealt with family geneaology.
There is a question mark after this note. Does anyone know any
connection between the above SHENKAR and R' Chaim's family? I am
trying to research my own family connection to Reb. Chaim without much
luck.

On my grandfather's tombstone, his father's name appeared to be Chet
Zayin Qof Yod Hey...what would that read as in Hebrew?

Thanks,

IEPM postscript #general

Allan Blacher <allanblacher@...>

Does anyone recognise the postscript I.E.P.M. ? It is probably German
or Yiddish and is almost certainly a statement of love - such as
I.L.Y. to say I Love You. I have searched Google and nothing has come
up. I suppose it may be something between the two people involved but
I am hoping that it may be a more commonly used expression.
No guesses please - only reply if you are reasonably confident.
Many thanks!!

Would anyone know if there are any records kept of the names of those people
who were in Concentration and/or DP Camps. My husbands parents (Polish
people) were married at the Polish Centre Pastorship in Gottingen Luttich
Kaserne (Germany) in 1949 (post war) but had previously been held as
prisoners of war, maybe in a camp at Gottingen or nearby before they came to
Australia. Which authority would have organised their trip?

Thank you for any replies.

Sorry Jeff, this is not a private reply as it probably interests quite a few
people. I wonder why the reply should be private on such a matter stretching back
200 years to Pressburg as Emmanuel BIACH mentioned below was born there in 1802 and
his wife in 1806. My reply is not of a private nature and I am not revealing any dark secrets.

You are quite wrong about Raymond LOEWY'S ancestry.
He was the second cousin of my mother. He is descended >from Johanna BIACH >from
Pressburg and Vienna, daughter of Emanuel BIACH and Fanny LEIDESDORF. THe latter
are one set of my maternal gt gt grandparents.

Johanna married Simon LOEWY >from Pressburg and Max was one of their three
children. Max had two sisters Louise {BEER} mother of the famous or infamous
Dr. Theodor BEER and Bertha [Blau}. One BLAU branch changed its name to Berndt.

Max must have moved to Paris >from Vienna where he married a Frenchwoman >from
the Ardeche called Marie LA BALME. They had three sons born in Paris. Raymond was one of them.

Max and Marie tragicallty died in the Spanish flu epidemic in 1919 leaving the
three boys as orphans to fend for themselves.

My branch of the BIACH family always kept in touch with Raymond as we had
another link to that branch through my grandfather's brother Leo KERNER who
married Raymond's first cousin Hanna BLAU. And l Iikewise kept in touch with his
daughter, Laurence, who died in Georgia in 2009. Laurence was born when Raymond
was 60 and she knew nearly nothing about her family history and referred
to me for help. The tree now continues through her young son Jacques in Georgia.
A biographical book should be appearing in the near future and hope it will
shed light on the fate of Raymond's brothers, which has always
been a mystery in the family. I believe one was a physician who settled in
NY. And the other was believed to have gone to South America.

Jeff, we have no Bohemian Karl or NaphtaIi LOEWY on our family tree unless they
are ancestors of Simon >from Pressburg, I know nothing about. I should add that
most branches of the BIACH family including mine settled in Vienna.

Why Max went to Paris >from Vienna, I do not know. I hope the latest research
will reveal this. Raymond was obviously reluctant to talk about his ancestry
to his daughte or most probably he knew very little anyway growing up in Paris.
There are large gaps in our knowledge of the migratory history of this family
but I have no doubt about the correctness Raymond's BIACH ancestry.

Laurence and I always planned to meet to discuss many points but sadly it was
not to be.

I keep an empty glass Coca Cola bottle near me to remind me of my cousin
Raymond.

The Greyhound Bus and iconic 1950s US cars, likewise designed by him are too
large to fit into my sitting room, so I just make do with photographs. The
streamlined electric Philishave razor I have no use for personally, but I do
recognise the simplicity and beauty of its design.

P.S. I send my thanks to the many participants of the LA conference who wrote
notes to me which Reneer Steinig compiled as an album and posted to me. Much
appreciated the album is also next to me by my computer.

Brno enquiry #austria-czech

My father Jakub BERKOVIC, after training in Berlin, went to serve as a
cantor in what the family (>from Khust, now in Ukraine) describe as a
'conservative synagogue' in Brno around the mid-1930s.

Can anyone with a knowledge of the city please suggest how I might
discover at which particular synagogue he may have served? Are there
surviving records that might include his details? Also, can anyone
please tell me what a cantor in a conservative synagogue in Brno at
that time would have worn? Family members in their 80s refer to him
wearing 'a tall hat'.

Sources of information on former German areas, now Poland. #germany

A recent inquiry regarding Zielona Gora prompts me to remind GerSig readers
about the best source of information on Jews in former German areas, now
Poland.

This is a two-volume book, "Quellen zur Geschichte der Juden in
Polnischen Archiven".

The Ortsregister in the annex identifies town by town
what material relating to Jews (some back to the 18th century) is held in
each individual town. For example, in the case of Zielona Gora there are
extensive Jewish documentary collections, but not birth records. However,
please note that the books identify records, but do not contain the
documents themselves. In addition, there is a Personenregister which can be
searched by family name and identifies those documents which relate to
single individuals.

Unfortunately, Quellen are difficult books to find, though they are held at
Leo Baeck and the USHMM, and researchers should search the web to identify
other libraries where these are available.

I plan to explore the possibility of placing the indexes on a website,
though, even if I am successful, researchers will still have to consult
the books. If I make progress on this I will let GerSig know.
