I believe this was a decision by the executive; that is what executives are
for, to make decisions for the members. It is hardly feasible for the
membership as a whole to be involved in most decisions. Nora Freund

hello,
this letter is interesting;
the event has occured on November 7th 1938:
the young Polish Jew Herschel Grynszpan murdered the German diplomat Von
Rath in Paris.
The Jews were afraid of any possible reaction and vengeance :
these happened to be Kristallnacht, the night of broken glasses, two nights
later, esp. in Germany.

On November 7, 1938, Ernst Von Rath, a secretary of the German Embassy
was murdered in Paris by Herschel Grynspan and this was the pretext for
the Krystal Nacht in Germany (9-10 November). I can guess that the Jews
living in France were scared of violent reactions too, but I have never
heard that anything serious happened in Paris. It would be possible to
check un the French newspapers of the time.

Hello to you,
Donna Douglas asked: I am wondering if some event happened in Paris or
France in the fall of 1938 that would be considered "nightmare' to the
Jewish community? Causing them to flee the city to the country?
Are you sure the letter is dated >from October? Because in November 1938
Herschel Grynszpan shot in Paris the German Ambassador's Secretary Ernst vom
Rath. Rath died a few days later. This gave the nazis the pretext to launch
a pogrom against German Jews: the infamous Kristallnacht.
I would imagine that this was pretty upsetting for French Jewry.

Maybe it was not "some event" that happened in Paris or France in
October 1938, but the too famous events in Munich, as described here
(for example) :
http://www.rijo.homepage.t-online.de/pdf/EN_MU_JU_eastern_deportation.pdf
that frightened the whole Jewish Community in the World, one year
before the beginning of WWII.

Dedication of renovated synagogue in Ostrow Wielkopolski #germany

Victoria Barkoff

I recently learned >from the historian of Ostrow Wielkopolski (Ostrowo, Posen)
that the dedication of the renovated Synagogue building, used by the Nazis
as a furniture warehouse, will take place on October 6.

The building, which recently won the national Facade of the Year award
in Poland, will serve as a cultural centre. The presence of descendants
of former Jewish residents of Ostrow Wielkopolski would be most
welcome at the ceremony.

In addition to renovating the synagogue, the City of Ostrow Wielkopolski
has created a memorial wall >from excavated fragments of matzevot.
City historian Mr. Jaroslav Biernaczyk has edited two volumes of essays
on the former Jewish community.

For further information on the "New Synagogue" and renovation project, see:

Alkies and Related Names from Bialystok Records #poland

Judi D Temple <jdktfam@...>

Greetings All,

I have loaded the four images into Viewmate with the following links:

http://www.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/responselist.asp?key=19939

http://www.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/responselist.asp?key=19940

http://www.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/responselist.asp?key=19941

http://www.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/responselist.asp?key=19942

These all relate to the same death record >from Bialystok. They include
page headers and detail records in both Cyrillic and Hebrew for one
death record.

All but one already have comments on them and I appreciate the feedback
very much. I do have some other general questions:

When records are kept in two languages, has anyone noticed the info
to ever differ between languages?

What is the origination of the name ALKIES? Is it related to Alk?

Records in the JRI-Poland database have been indexed as Alkes, Alkies,
Olkies, Elkes, Elkies, etc. Could these all be my family or do the names
have different origins? I do know that my great-grandfather
naturalized as Elkes, had one brother as Elkis and the rest of the family
were Alkes in the US. Is there a spelling or meaning difference in the
names or could the difference relate to just the writer of the record?

By the way, I have ordered and will retain indefinitely at my local LDS
center all of the microfilms I could find on Bialystok and Ciechanowiec,
Poland. The film numbers I either have or will have available include:

1191364
1191933-937 inclusive
747735-737 inclusive
1618509-510
1186427

1186427 contains Ciechanowiec and 1191937 contains both Bialystok and
Ciechanowiec records. You can see descriptions of the content of the
films at these links:

I would be happy to pull records for you >from these films. I will need the
film number, name, gender, record number and whether it is a birth,
marriage or death record you seek on the film to find your record.
All of this is provided in the indices on Jewishgen and JRI-Poland.
I can't read the films so I can't "search" through the films looking for
records. Please email the request to me directly. It may
take a few weeks depending on the number of requests and my schedule.

I also ordered Derby, Meriden and Wallingford CT general vital record
films if anyone is interested in anything >from those. Some of these
would be indexed on
Familysearch.org. For the most part, these are not Jewish records.

Polangen: Lists found in Latvian Archives #lithuania

Joyaa Antares

Dear Fellow Researchers,

The following Lists have been located in the Latvian Archives:

1. 1845 Polangen Family List

2. 1895, 1900-1917 Merchant Lists for Polangen

Polangen was part of Telsiai prior to 1819, and was then in Courland until
1921. Consequently data for its townsfolk has become quite scattered, some
of it appearing in Grobin District Lists held at the Latvian archives.
Examples of scattered data include a broader 1837 List (List of Jews of
Kurland wishing to emigrateâ€), as well as Army Revision Lists for 1868 and
1904.

Polangen is less than 10 miles >from Kretinga, Darbenai, Trakiai and Valenai
so so we anticipate the usual overlap with local shtetls.

We - that is, several LitvakSIG members and I - wish to obtain and
transcribe the known Lists, AND mindful of the ready passage of Litvak Jews
to Latvia, we wish to establish what other relevant data is held by the
Latvian Archives.

Owing to the Latvian connection, we are setting up a Special Fund, with a
starting budget of $500. Having discussed this with Dorothy Leivers and Jill
Anderson, I am willing to get the ball rolling with a donation of $125 and
we seek donations to supplement this.

Please can you show your interest in this proposal by making a donation?
Simply go to www.litvaksig/contribute select Districts then Telsiai and
then in the notes, please indicate POLANGEN so that we are able to track the
support for this proposal. If you have any questions of a general nature
(such as relating to the moves of Jews between Lithuania and Latvia), please
write to this List or search the archives. If you have specific questions
about this Fund/Project, please write to me directly -
