Offering NYC Lookups Municipal Archives / Library #general

A. E. Jordan

If anyone needs assistance with look ups and retrievals in New York City at the
Municipal Archives, Manhattan probate court, or the NY Public Library, I am will
be back there this coming Friday and will have a little time available to help
others.

What I can do is retrieve or read and transcribe vital records that you have
identified while I am at the NYC Municipal Archives or assist with various other
records >from around New York City..

The Archives holds:
NYC births through 1909
NYC Deaths through 1948
NYC marriages both Health Department and City Clerk through 1949

Generally what I do is retrieve the files you have identified but can not access
on your own. I can buy copies $11 each at the Archives or take notes and email you.
(No photos the Archives does not permit that.)

Also if you have a "maybe" file I can look at it and compare it against your
information, example to see if the parent's names are what you expected, so save
buying something only to find it it is the wrong person.

I do appreciate a few dollars to help offset my expenses when I do this plus any
printing costs.

Email me off list if you are interested and we can discuss what I can do.

Always happy to offer advice or comments about NYC area research and the tricks of
the trade.

On Anniversary of Warsaw Ghetto Uprising Great Synagogue of Warsaw Commemorated #poland

Jan Meisels Allen

On April 19, 1943 the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising began, holding the ghetto for
nearly a month. After the Nazi's took back control they destroyed the Great
Synagogue of Warsaw. The Great synagogue was opened in 1878 for moderate
reform Judaism. It was the largest synagogue in the city where one-third of
its population was Jewish,

On the evening of April 18, to avoid the Sabbath and beginning of Passover,
the Great Synagogue was virtually recreated as a multi-media light show to
commemorate the Ghetto uprising, The multimedia program included archival
recordings of a prewar cantor, Gerszon Sirota, who died in the ghetto.

The sound and light show was organized by Open Republic, a group that fights
anti-Semitism. It was the work of a Polish artist Gabi von Seltmann. Von
Seltmann's grandfather was a Polish school director who was killed at
Auschwitz. Her husband is a grandson of one of the SS officers who inflicted
atrocities in Poland. Von Seltmann wants Polish society to remember the
large Jewish community that was once an integral part of a multicultural
country.

Re: Seek Richard CRAMER,New York son of Heinrich CRAMER #germany

Ken Elstein <kenelstein@...>

Richard CRAMER (5 Jan 1883-Aug 1969) was a physician who arrived in
New York City on 1 April, 1940. He actually appears two weeks later in
the 1940 US Census, living a s a "lodger" in Sunnyside, Queens, New
York City.

The ship manifest of the MV Britannic shows the names of his wife
Angela in Germany and a cousin Setti LOE B in Manhattan, New York City.
It is interesting that he managed to arrive by ship >from Liverpool to
New York, seven months after Britain and Germany were at war but 20
months before the US formally entered World War II.

The boat had only 29 passengers, most of whom were Jewish (including
Richard), though the ship was built to hold over 1100 passengers.
Though the ship itself had both previously and later carried British
troops, this voyage took place during an interval in which it was
technically back in commercial service. It seems likely that the ship
primarily was used to carry supplies >from the US on its return trip,
since it obviously was not making money carrying passengers. It might
also have been a target of German submarines.

Richard CRAMER worked in the Farm Colony Hospital in Staten Island,
New York City.

A woman named Angela Antonia CRAMER, age 53, arrived in New York on 15
Feb 1950. Since she listed her address as Farm Colony, Staten Island,
New York, she certainly is the same person listed with Richard's
arrival ten years earlier. We know Dr. Richard CRAMER worked at the
Farm Colony Hospital >from his World War II draft registration.

They appear to be the same couple named Richard CRAMER and Angela
Cramer who had a marriage license issued in New York City on 1 Mar
1950. Assuming that these are the same people, it is possible that
Richard and Angela wanted a legal marriage in the USA, of which they
may or may not have had documents >from Germany. The marriage license
was dated exactly two weeks after her arrival.

A couple named Dr. Richard CRAMER and Angela Cramer are buried in the
same niche in historic Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York City.
She was buried 7 Sep 1983; he was buried on 7 Oct 1969.

The original records can be found on FamilySearch.org and on
Ancestry.com, including his US Social Security death record.

I'm researching the HASSENDER and GRUN families. My father told me hat he
heard his family came >from Bavaria. Years ago I did see a HASSENDER in

My ancestors in both families immigrated to Hungary.

My mother's family is related to the ROTHSCHILD family. I believe it's

I would appreciate any help you can give. Thank you.

American Consular in Warsaw 1937 #general

Marjorie Geiser

Hi All,

I had found a letter >from an attorney representing what might be my
great-grandfather, Mowsza LEWIN, dated 1937, leaving an estate in
Poland. It was to the US State Department, stating that Mowsza had
died, and his children in the US, who were citizens, wanted to know
how to "protect" and "collect" on this estate.

In the letter, it says that Mowsza was in "... the Colony Peawlowa, near the town
of Rozona, int he County of Kosow in the province of Grodno, Poland."

The State Dept replied, suggesting they contact the American Consular in Warsaw.
But I don't know how to see what happened after that. I'm not entirely sure I have
the right Mowsza, but the location fits, thanks to a document Stanley >from
JRI-Poland had earlier found for me,which was his son, Isaac's, marriage in Warsaw
(which is, again all I have).

After getting that marriage record, I thought it would have been easy
to find more about my grandfather, Jacob LEWIN (LEVINE), who was born
in Warsaw in 1902, then came to the US in 1906. Or info on his father,
Isaac, who appears to have been born in Grodno in 1871. But this
entire family, even while in the US, has been an interesting
challenge. Jacob's mother was Sarah SILVER, (SILBERNAGEL and in the
Warsaw marriage record, ZYLBERNAGEL).

I just sent an email to someone in Outreach at the American Foreign
Service Association, since nothing came up when I searched the National Archives.

However, my main question is does anyone have an idea of where could
go or do to see if I could find out what came of this letter about Mowsza.

Thank you,
Margie Geiser

Jewish Heritage Europe has a current article highlighting the work of Jewish
genealogist Peter Absolon and his restoration of the large Jewish cemetery
in Kosice, Slovakia. There is a link to the currently restored 30
gravestones and he is expecting to restore an additional 40-50 gravestones.
There is information on the "new Jewish Cemetery" which opened in 1889

Har Nebo lookup request #general

Marty Meyers <martymeyers@...>

Happy Pesach everyone

Is there someone in the Philadelphia area who could visit Har Nebo
Cemetery and take pictures of two KUSHNER stones, burial dates 1903
and 1925, for me? I just called and obtained the locations and would
very much like to obtain photos of the stones and learn the names of
their parents.

The family used KUSNER, KIRZNER and many other similar spellings.
The family was >from Ostrog, very close to Slavuta, in Volyn Gubernia
where my KIRSHNER lived.
This family, as well as mine, each show multiple marriages between
KIRSCHNER and BALIN so I'm pretty certain we are distant relatives.

If you can help me out, please contact me privately.

Reclaim The Records files new lawsuit asking for all New York City death certificates 1949-1968 *AND* for nullification of NYC DOH records access rules #general

Asparagirl

Hello again >from Reclaim The Records! We='re that scrappy little
activist group of genealogists, historians, journalists, and open
government advocates, fighting for better public access to
government-held genealogical and historical documents. And today, we
have some very exciting news.

We just filed a new lawsuit, the biggest, baddest Freedom of
Information lawsuit that we've ever filed. It's a milestone case, not
only for our organization, but also for how genealogists, historians,
and researchers as a community deal with government agencies who
routinely withhold historical records >from the public, and who pass
capricious and irrational restrictions on public access.

Yesterday afternoon, in the Supreme Court of New York, New York
County, we filed an Article 78 Petition against the following agencies
and people:

- The New York City Department of Mental Health and Hygiene
- The New York City Bureau of Vital Statistics
- The New York City Board of Health
- Oxiris Barbot in her official capacity as New York City Commissioner of
Health
- Gretchen Van Wye in her official capacity as New York City Registrar
- And last but certainly not least, Steven P. Schwartz in his official
capacity as former New York City Registrar

This Petition challenges not only the Department of Healths refusal
to disclose records to us based on New York's Freedom of Information
Law (FOIL), but it also challenges the Department of Health's
restrictive regulations themselves. Additionally, this is the first
time that our organization has gone after actual vital record
certificates, as opposed to a records index of some sort.

And you can ***Read All About It***, including direct links to all our
paperwork and court filings, in our latest newsletter, which is also
available on our website:

https://www.reclaimtherecords.org/records-request/24/

If you want to skip right to the actual Article 78 Petition text (as a
PDF), it's here:

https://www.reclaimtherecords.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/reclaim_the_records_vs_nyc_doh_et_al_-_article_78_petition.pdf
[or https://tinyurl.com/y293v6eg --Mod.]

(It's forty-seven pages of fun!)

Because this is a Jewish genealogy listserve, we should add this important
note:

We're asking for uncertified scanned copies of all New York City death
certificates for the years 1949-1968. It's over 1.6 million records.
During this time period, the population of NYC was approximately 25%
Jewish. (That doesn't mean 25% *of deaths* in this time period were
also Jewish people, but probably close to that.)

So, *if* we win this case, this would be approximately 400,000 death
certificates for Jews >from what was at the time the largest Jewish
population in the world. And most of the certificates have the
decedent's parents and/or spouses named too. So that could be as many
as 1.6 million names in total. And so this would be one of the largest
***Public And Free*** Jewish genealogy records collections in existence.

Also, make sure you check out David Bushman's affidavit in support of
the lawsuit, which is linked >from our newsletter -- he explicitly
brings up the issue of BRCA carriers needing access to these records
for family health reasons.

Happy to answer questions...enjoy the reading!
