The Miskolc Cemetery Project - Additional Funds Needed #hungary

j.kovacs@...

Dear Friends,

Thanks to the H-SIG volunteers and Nolan Altman who are working on the Miskolc
Cemetery Book Project data entry and validation to help create a searchable data
base >from the Miskolc records that will be added to JewishGenJOWBR (JewishGenâ??s
Online Burial Registry) database. These volunteers are transcribing 600 pages
of 20th century deaths >from a Miskolc cemetery book.

As the 18th and 19th century cemetery records were lost during the Holocaust, we
plan to photograph approximately 10,000-12,000 18th and 19th century headstones
at an approximate cost of $1.00 per headstone that will be incorporated into
JOWBR database at http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/cemetery/.

Many thanks to all who have contributed funds so far to this project. However,
in order to achieve our objective to photograph the 18th and 19th century
headstones we need additional funds. For further details of our new project and
to make contributions please refer to
http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/v_projectslist.asp?project_cat=15

description of the project. Your donations are urgently needed to continue this
important project.

CHURG, CHURGIN, CHARGIN #france

Palekaiko

My searching has led me to a family that originated in Dolhinow,
Poland/Russia and at least one member of this family immigrated to
France. I am requesting assistance in locating any information that
might be in the French archives. I don't speak or read French, hence
my request of help. The sketchy information I have is as follows:

Wolf and Gita CHURG/CHURGIN had two sons, Jacob (b 1910, Minsk, d
2005, Los Angeles) and Elie. Jacob immigrated to the US and was noted
pathologist. Elie immigrated to France.

Elie CHURG married Blanch and they had two children, Michel and
Katheryn, both whom are alive and live in France.

If anyone can add any information, I would appreciate it.

Ellen Cassedy to speak on "We Are Here: Memories of the Lithuanian Holocaust" #lithuania

Jane Rosen Berenbeim

The Jewish Genealogical Society invites you to attend its next meeting,
featuring Ellen Cassedy, speaking on her new book, We Are Here: Memories
of the Lithuanian Holocaust.

Note: Ms. Cassedy's presentation will be preceded by a brief talk by
JGS member and professional genealogist, Avrum Geller, on "1940 Census
Search Hints."

Date and Place:
Sunday, March 25, 2012
Center for Jewish History
15 West 16th Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues
New York, NY

Program
Ellen Cassedy set off into the Jewish heartland of Lithuania to study
Yiddish and connect with her Jewish forebears. Her new book describes
how what began as a personal journey of return expanded into a larger
quest to understand how Lithuanian Jews and non-Jews alike are confronting
the country's twentieth century history.

Ms. Cassedy has explored the world of the Holocaust in Lithuania, and her
Jewish roots there, for ten years. Her articles and translations have
appeared in The Forward, Hadassah, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Lilith,
Bridges, Shofar: an Interdisciplinary Journal of Jewish Studies, and
Pakn-treger.

She is a former columnist for the Philadelphia Daily News and the author
of two books for working women. A book-signing will follow the
presentation.

The Ackman & Ziff Family Genealogy Institute at the CJH will be open at
11:00 AM for networking with other researchers and access to research
materials and computers.

The program is free to members of JGSNY; there is a $5 charge for guests.
