Kaluszer Society #galicia

JoeO222@...

Hi...

I have an ancestor, Isaac OPPENHEIM, buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery in NYC. I
was told by a clerk that he was buried in "The Independent Kaluszer Society".
When I asked what that was, I was just told, "that was the society".

What does society mean in regards to a cemetery? Also, does anyone know what
this particular society means? What does "Kaluszer" mean?

Thanks....Joe Oppenheim

Radauti #galicia

Suzan Wynne <srwynne@...>

Radauti is in Romania...the territory used to be part of the Austrian
Empire but it was not in Galicia. I would suggest that the person
searching for family connections get in touch with ROM-SIG.

Monica Talmor <mtalmor@BIOMED.MED.YALE.EDU> asked how
to circumvent NY State's 50-year privacy rule to obtain
a death certifcate filed 21 years ago on Long Island.

This record is also on file with NY State Dept. of Health.
According to its web site

http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/consumer/vr/geninst.htm

"time periods are waived if the applicant is a descendant or
has been designated to act on behalf of a descendant of the
person whose record is being requested." No mention is made
of required proof of relationship.

Don't forget to try the local Jewish funeral homes.
They are generally very cooperative and often have excellent
computerized records.

In response to one of the 2 questions, Volume 5 was published in 1997. The
encyclopedia is in Hebrew. It has articles (some brief, some long) on
each name listed. For some of the Rabbis listed there are photos as well.

Wunder, Rabbi Meir. Meorei Galicia : Encyclopedia of Galician Rabbis and
Scholars. Vol. 1 - 5. Jerusalem Institute for Commemoration of Galician
Jewry. Jerusalem : 1978 - 1997.

Spring Issue -- 1994 (Vol. 1, No. 3) prints a list of Galician Rabbi's in
Rabbi Meir Wunder's Meorei Galicia (Volume IV) "Encyclopedia of Galician
Rabbis and Scholars"

Among the names listed is FIHRRER/FUHRER, which we have an interest in. The
article mentions that Volume V was to be published soon. Does anyone know
if the fifth volume was indeed published and how we can access further
information? Does this book contain biographies or a brief synopsis of each
name listed?

1938 Vienna Names #general

Kaplan <vkaplan@...>

I was interested to see the list of names regarding confiscated assets
in Vienna, 1938. On the list are two names on Klosterneubergerstr. My
family had a store, confiscated by the Nazis at 73 Klosterneubergerstr.

The family name was Karpel. My grandmother, a widow, was remarried and
her name was Johanna Kohn at the time. If anyone has information or
knowledge of the family or events of that time, kindly reply. Also, has
anyone been successful to date with claiming restitution >from Vienna
regarding these looted assets?

Their home was on Lichtensteinstr.

Please write to me at: vkaplan@home.com

Thank you

Vivian Kaplan
