Hello,

Many Gesher Galicia members with an @home.com email address renewed their
2001-2 membership before the demise of that provider. These email addresses
are still listed in the Gesher Galicia Family Finder and on our membership
database. When @home.com went out of business, we all had to change our ISP
but many of you have forgotten to inform Gesher Galicia of your new address.

This may also apply to those of you who have changed >from other email
providers since your renewal.

If you haven't already done so, please let us know your new email address.

I deleted the @home.com addresses >from subscribers to this list because they
are no longer valid (they were in a 'bad address' list). Most of you
resubscribed with your new email address.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Seeking to Honor Heroic Act #unitedkingdom

Lara Samet <Lara.Samet@...>

Hello and thank you in advance for continuing...

I am writing as a volunteer at the HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society)
Family History and Location Service in New York and am seeking
assistance in locating an individual known to have immigrated to Great
Britain after the Holocaust. This man left a DP camp, presumably in the
mid/late 1940s, and settled in England after supposedly being taken in
by a family who is now applying for status as "Righteous Among the
Nations." Yad Vashem, who is behind my inquiry, needs to corroborate the
family's story before they can be honored. Thus, we must located MR. X,
a relative, or a descendant as soon as possible.

As we in New York are unfamiliar with the most useful sources for such
information in your country, and understand that census data is not yet
available for the time in question, we are hoping that someone can
inform us of any publications, resources, or libraries that would
further assist us in our search.

Many thanks,

Ronald Gold

I need assistance by someone living in the Netherlands to make a couple of
phone calls in order to identify a Jewish child that was hidden during
World War II. I have the names and the towns where the people are located.
I will forward all details and information. The child was saved by a person
being nominated for a Righteous Gentile award.

Re: Holocaust refugees turned back to Europe from Palestine? #general

Paul Silverstone

The British government after 1937-38 started limiting Jewish immigration
into Palestine. In April 1939 the White Paper was issued limiting
Jewish immigration to 75,000 during the next five years.
Around that time three small ships arriving in Haifa were forced back
out to sea.
The Romanian steamer Sandu with 269 people on board was arrested on
March 23rd and sent back.
On April 1st, the Astir with 724 people was brought into Haifa. Among
these were 200 members of Betar. Forced to leave, the ship wandered the
Mediterranean for some 16 weeks, short of provisions.
On March 31st, the Aghios Nicolaos was fired on by a British patrol boat
and one refugee was killed. She had sailed >from Constanta. Her
passengers later landed secretly on the beach.
Worse, on April 11th the Assimi with 369 passengers arrived. The people
were detained on board while the captain was tried in court, and then
the ship was forced to leave on the 23rd. She was unseaworthy and in
urgent need of provisions and water. On July 7th, her passengers were
seized while trying to land at Nahariya.

All the people on these ships eventually made their way to Palestine
within a few months. All later arrivals were taken into Haifa and the
passengers interned at Sarafand or Athlit camps until the quota opened
up and they were released.

These were the only instances of people being turned away by the
Palestine authorities. Some other groups and ships never made it to
Palestine. In one large group detained at Kladovo in Yugoslavia, and
915 were killed by the Nazis after the German invasion in 1941.

Of the group deported to Mauritius in 1940, all were returned to
Palestine in 1945.

Complete information may be found in my booklet *Our Only Refuge, Oplen
the Gates!* I am also giving a talk on this subject at the Toronto
conference.

Mary D. Taffet <mdtaffet@...>

While I am not a researcher of this name, there is a LAPIDUS in my file;
Dora LAPIDUS married Irving TAFFET (my husband's great-uncle).

I found that in this particular case, the LAPIDUS surname had at one
time been LAPIDOWSKY. I found Dora listed as a child in her father's
household for the 1900 census, under the surname LAPIDOWSKY.

==Yes, indeed. It's a Biblical name, Lapidot, or Ish Lapidot. Lapid is a
