Leder/Dolina #galicia

CrisisPro@...

I am searching LEDER family, which I believe lived in Dolina in what was
Galicia, now the Ukraine.

My great grandmother was Sime Paya LEDER, who married Moishe COHOS (also
spelled KOHOS, or KOSS)in Falticeni, Romania. They had 3 children -
Freida (Fannie, my grandmother, Ida, and Samuel, all of whom emigrated to
the U.S. afer 1912. Moishe died before that in Romania.

My aunt Ida married a cousin, Nathan LEDER, a member of the same LEDER
family >from Galicia.

One other member of the LEDER family is Mimi LEDER, a well-known Hollywood
director. That is all I know about the Leders, apart >from the close
connections we have with the cousins who grew up with my mother in NY.

If any of these names show up on your tree, please contact me.

I am writing a text around the railway station in Lubaczow and wonder if

Thanks.

Article on Brody #galicia

Heidi <hurich@...>

There's an interesting article about the city of Brody in today's Ha'aretz
English edition (April 24, 2003). Brody was once called the "Jerusalem of
Austria." It changed nationalities a few times and is now in Ukraine. Go
to www.haaretz.com and look for the article entitled "Brody between two
lines" by Ruhama Elbag.

Yehuda is spelled with a final ALEPH and not a final HEY #galicia

Hinda Solomon

The reason names are spelled with an aleph instead of a hey is that they
are based on Aramaic spelling.

My great grandmother Hinda SELKOWITZ (ZELKOWICZ) who was born in Klobuck,
Poland and buried (1916) in the Washington Cemetery also has a final aleph
at the end of her name on her gravestone. I spell mine with a hey.

Look at Chad Gadya >from the Passover Haggadah and the Mourner's Kaddish
for a proliferation of words ending in aleph.

Re: Is Early 20th. Century London Directory Of Physicians / Database Accessable? #unitedkingdom

Michele Anderson <trinafour@...>

Dear Richard

I don't know whether there is an accessible database of doctors, but if he
qualified he would have been registered with the British Medical
Association. This would cover the whole of Britain. A quick search of the
internet would probably provide you with an answer or at least who to
contact.

Another possible source of information could be the Wellcome (think I've
spelt it correctly) Institute. They do have a large archive of medical
information.

There is also local directories available which cover every type of trade,
but for these you would need to know where he was living or practicing.

Good luck

not Otto MAY became a medical doctor in the early
20th. century and if so,information about his
specialization and professional practice?

PEISCHEL, PEITCHEL, PEITSCHEL, PITCHEL from Austria #galicia

Kathleen Pitchel <kpitchel@...>

I am researching Myer Wolf Peischel who emigrated >from Lemburg in 1900. He
was >from the village of Nowosiolka, Austria. Myer's date of birth is around
1857. His wife was Chaje and they had eight children--Israel, Jente, Tene,
Kalmen, Chaim, Beile, Schmil and Dwora. Myer had three
brothers--Jacob, Harry and Isaac. He had one sister but I do not know
her name. Myer's parents were Israel Moishe and Natalie.

One of Myer's daughters listed Przegnojow, Austria (possibly near
Przemyslany) as her place of residence. Samuel Pitchel (Isaac's son and
Myer's nephew) had Therespol, Austria listed as his place of birth on his
naturalization papers dated 1900.

Would be interested in hearing >from anyone researching the above names or
who has information on the places.

Thank you for your time.

Last message from the old JewishGen server! #general

Dick@...

With this message and the digest that goes out just after midnight tonight
Houston time, JewishGen is retiring its old Lyris list server that has served
us, sometimes not so faithfully, for the last few years. After the digests
go out tonight, the server will be shut down and its contents transferred to
a new server with a new version of the Lyris software.

There will be a (brief, we hope) period tomorrow, Saturday, when we will not
be able to moderate and you will receive no messages >from any JewishGen
lists. Then we expect to be back doing our job as before, only with better
software and hardware backing us up.

If all goes according to plan, you will see no change. But if you pay close
attention over the next several months, you may notice fewer days when no
digest goes out, fewer times when you try to change your subscription
settings and can't get into the server. As moderators, we expect to notice
the improvements more directly, with more reliable and faster communications,
making our jobs as volunteer moderators easier.

The other side of this equation is that the new software license and hardware
cost money. If you want to be sure that we will still be here with the data
and services you rely on, next year and the year after and the year after
that, and you want to help make sure that the next time our software becomes
obsolete and our hardware creaky and unreliable, we can once again upgrade to
what we need to give you what you need, you know how to help.

Go to

http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/

and make your tax-deductible contribution today.

And we'll see you soon on the new Lyris server!
