Dear JewGenners,

While preparing my lecture for the 24th International Conference on Jewish
Genealogy in Jerusalem next July I am now studyng the census of Livorno
(Leghorn) of 1841. I can do _some_ simple look up for surnames.
If you are not in hurry, you can ask me for a look up inserting in the body
of your message the word "Nardo" so my mail program will highlight it.
Please limit your request to Livorno.

Sincerely
Nardo Bonomi

Hungarian Holocaust Memorial Events #hungary

Gábor Hirsch <hirsch@...>

I visited shortly Hungary and also the Jewish community center in Sip
utca. I claimed that in general we are very late informed about the
different commemoration date held in Hungary in memory of the
deportation and the many victims, as the Uj Elet, the Hungarian biweekly
brings the information at the 1. May and the commemorations starts
around 25 May with Baja, in 2001 it started already on the 20th.
According them they get the dates >from the different communities at
Passover and as usual several communities present it even later. Then it
will be edited, printed and mailed. I seldom got it more than two weeks
before the first date was actuell. I asked them to publish it earlier as
the ones far away needs more time for preparation of the journey, so
lets hope. It was told and I checked it out the hungarian Jews (magyar
zsidosag) has a homepage http://www.zsidohitkozseg.hu, with different
newspapers, Uj Elet, Remeny, you can even subsribe to t6heir news,
religious information, ask the rabbi, links. Represented is MAZSIHISZ
the organisation of the Hungarian communities as well as the >from
Budapest and last but not least you can choose between Hungarian and
English language (but here you have certain limitation). You might even
sends an eMail, whether you get any answer, I can't say. Good luck for
your trip.

In 2001 We went by train >from Budapest thru Miscolk and Kocice where

Rental Car was impossible but we arrainged thru our Hotel for a Taxi from=

Kezmarok to Levoca., round trip and 2 hrs at the Levoca Archive. The nex=

Marrage records #galicia

Errol Schneegurt

Hi,
I have been looking at some of the translations I am getting associated with
birth records form the city of Lviv and found that in some cases the recording
of the marriage is some time after the birth.

I understand the reasoning behind only recording the birth in religious
records and not on the civil records. What would be the reasoning of not recording
the marriage in the civil records and what would force the recording in the
civil records at a future date?

What could I expect to see on a marriage record if I tried to get copies of
them?

Thanks,

Errol Schneegurt LI NY ESLVIV@...

Isn't this fun - a success story! #galicia

Marlene Bishow <mlbishow@...>

Dear Galitzianers:

About a week ago, while querying the Family Tree of the Jewish People for
some information for a cousin, I got carried away and plugged in some other
family names. When I put in DEUTSCHER, I got quite a number of hits, but as
I browsed the list, I recognized a name! The entry said Unknown DEUTSCHER m.
Scheindel (Jennie) Pack. Well, I had a great aunt Jennie DEUTSCHER and her
maiden name was PACK. Could this be her? I sent an email to the researcher
who had posted the information.

A short time later I heard >from Anita and we went back and forth putting the
pieces to the puzzle together. Yes, her Jennie PACK DEUTSCHER born in
Drohobyz, Austria was my great aunt and the wife of my paternal great uncle
Harry DEUTSCHER, born in Rozniatow, Austria. I filled her in on their
children, Ruth and Herbert, and theri children too! I was even able to
provide her with digitized images, some dating back to 1912. We continued to
chat back and forth..........

At some point we discovered that Jennie's brother Aaron died in 1940 and his
widow, Gussie, married the widower of another one of my relatives, my
paternal great aunt, Esther KATZ TEPPER. Her widower was DAVE TEPPER. Anita
mentioned that she could confirm the TEPPER connection because Gussie TEPPER
is buried with her first husband Aaron PACK. Dave TEPPER is buried with his
wife Esther. I was even able to identify Dave's resting place in New
Montifiroe Cemetery in NY.

It is really a high when you make a connection and while this was not a
major one for either of us, it certainly helped to fill in some voids.

I hope that you are having as much fun as I am......May you have many
successes!

Death certificate from Israel #general

Rose Feldman <rosef@...>

I just went through getting a death certificate for my mother who passed
away, so I can offer you some help.
1. The death certificate is in hebrew only. I talked to them on the phone
and they have as of yet to figure or implement the production of the death
certificate in english >from the computer.
2. Here is the internet site (sorry only in hebrew) where you can get the
forms to order the death certificate.
http://www.moin.gov.il/ click on "shirutim vetefasim" (4th >from right on
the mustard colored bar near the top)
3. There is a form you can down load as a pdf file to send them.
4. there is/was an online form to oder the certificate through the
internet. But you need the person's israeli ID and you have to be a
relative and of course know hebrew and have a computer that handles hebrew.
In addition to all that - the offices are on strike at the moment.
