NYC Conference Accommodations #general

Robert Zavos <rzavos@...>

Dear Friends,

I have had a terrific amount of excellent suggestions on NYC accomodations for
next year. There are a number of issues in addition to prices and there is a much
wider price range around NYC than I had thought. I was thinking all decent hotel
in Manhattan were $300 or more per night but it appears there are some a lot less
and if you go outside the conference area, choices are even better. I will email
a summary of all suggestions (without names or emails) to anyone who has or will
request it. I believe there will be some options on the official NY JGS website
too. I tried to respond to everyone but on a few days I was especially
overwhelmed with responses plus a lot of normal spam. This is a great message
board with a lot of good ideas. Thanks again to all who responded.

Accommodation for Conference #general

Ida & Joseph Schwarcz

Dear friends,
A few times in the past we stayed at the Plaza Motor Inn in Secaucus, New Jersey.
The rates were very reasonable and it is located across the street >from the bus to
the Port Authority. At the times we were there the last bus left the Port
Authority around 11PM. We became friendly with the owner and even discussed
genealogy with him. (Of course there may be a different owner now)
This hotel can be accessed at www.plazamotorinn.com. It is located at 155
Route 3 East, Secaucus NJ 07094. Free phone, 1-888-421-8282.
Sincerely,

I want to support Saul's standpoint that urban Jewry in South Africa has not
been methodically addressed, although the Durban project is to be praised.

We are dealing with an issue that involved the majority of S African Jewry,
its institutions,and families.
I suggest we begin with those of >from urban and suburban communities to at
least record details, of family, neighbours, friends in their neighbourhood.
Perhaps all subscribers/recipients of the SA SIG newsletter should lead the
way.

A modest example appeared in our first newsletter on Woodstock by yours
truly.

I cannot think of anything more worthwhile in our current priorities.

Dear Genners

I respect what has been said by Saul about the book "Jewish Life in SA
Country Communities Vol 2" and am sure that it will be a must for anyone
tracing the families of those who lived in the area covered by the book.

However, I will disagree with Saul's last statement ..... "For me it has
also highlighted, again, the problem of no equivalent project
for the 'urban' Jews of the cities of South Africa."

There is a team of writers and compilers working feverishly in Durban to
finalise a major work which will be published on the Durban Jewish
community. This obviously takes into account the previous two works in
the past, and traces the history of families, personalities, those in
professions, art, drama, music and sport almost to the present day.
Hopefully this work will be completed within the next year. I will keep
you posted on progress.

Re: Rozdol records #galicia

Allen,

Rozdol records go through 1901. They get released in bunches so I
expected they would have been among the Forty or so towns that came out
last summer (2004), but I was disappointed. I expect they'll be in the
next batch, whenever that is.

Tell more about your family. We may have some overlapping interests.

I am indebted to readers of this site who answered my posting seeking
information about my grandfather™s town in Galicia and guided me to the
index of records for JRI-Poland. Even without the source documents, the
index itself has proved to be a treasure trove of information about the
history of my family and enabled me to identify family members who lived
in a nearby town, and who preceded by grandfather to New York. An
examination of the birth records >from the Rozdol administrative
sub-district of Stanislawow for 1869 to1900 allowed me to identify by name
2 brothers and 3 sisters of my grandfather. My grandfather said that he
had 6 sisters and the notations on the reverse of photographs he received
from Galicia confirm that. Three sisters must have been born after 1900.
QUESTION: Are there more birth records for the period after 1900 for
Rozdol? Are they accessible?

A family member is planning a second trip to RADOM. Does anybody know how
to gain entrance to the Radom cemetery? I tried in 2002 but could not find
a contact to unlock the gate.

Thank you,
