Zbaraz visit #galicia

jeffrey segal <jeff.segal@...>

I plan to visit Zbaraz with my elderly parents in the second week of April
2006, looking up ancestral addresses and touring sites of Jewish interest.
Would anyone who has previously been there be able to recommend
guides/interpreters and suitable hotels (if not in Zbaraz itself then
perhaps in Ternopil (Tarnopol)?

Any other advice and guidance would be very welcome too.

Thanks and regards

Births and midwives #galicia

Gabe Kingsley <gabek1@...>

I first want to thank all who responded to my question about birth
registration in the name of the mother, or even the failure to
register a birth. I received many informative and highly interesting
responses that are quite enlightening about the time in which our
ancestors lived, how alienated they felt >from surrounding society and
the eternal importance of family.

I wanted to pass along a curious anecdote about my grandfather Juda
KUBERT's family >from Jezierzany. My grandfather's oldest son, my
father's oldest brother, told me that the midwife who delivered him
and his three younger brothers (all boys in the family) was the same
woman who attended the five births of my grandfather and his four
siblings in Jezierzany and Skala. All four of his children were born
while they lived at two of different addresses on Rivington St. on
the Lower-East Side of New York. Her name was Rebecca Rosenstock and
she lived on Houston St. I have not yet taken time to search for her
immigration record, but plan to do so.

In theory, I'm prepared to reveal their warts if that's what can be found

I find myself holding back such information.

However I choose, as a descendent, the act of making such choices is a way
to undo a little of the damage.

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>

Unwittingly, I typed the incorrect psalm number for the origin of Rabbi
Oshry's name in my prior message. The correct one is for the psalm known as
The Ashrei, Psalm #145.

Searching for Dita YAGLOM or JAGLOM #general

Jane Reifer <cluttercontrol@...>

I wonder if someone can help me get in touch with Dita YAGLOM or JAGLOM of
Israel. She was the daughter of Manfred and Janka REIFER, cousins of mine. I
understand that her husband was once mayor of Karmiel, Israel, but I can't
seem to confirm that. She is also the sister-in-law of Raia YAGLOM.

Thank you for replying privately.

JGS Greater Philadelphia: Change in November Program #general

Joan Rosen <jgrosen@...>

JGSGP regrets that Rabbi Lance Sussman will be unable to meet with us on
November 14. Instead, we will be showing a video.

*Echoes that remain* (62 minutes)
A study of Jewish shtetl life before the Holocaust, combining hundreds of
rare archival photos and previously unseen film footage, with live action
sequences shot on location at the sites of former Jewish communities in
Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland and Romania.

We hope to schedule the rabbi for a meeting in the future.
