JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Dear Celia and all,
We now have the name HACHUEL to add to our Sephardic family tree and this may----------> The HATCHWELL (anglicized form) of HATCHUEL or HATUEL is a well known surname in Northern Morocco, especially in Tetuan and Tangiers with roots in medieval Spain. Abraham Laredo, author of "Les noms des Juifs du Maroc' (Madrid, 1978)[Surnames of Moroccan Jews] , as well as Joseph Toledano, author of Les noms de famille juifs d'Afrique du Nord (Jerusalem, 1999) [Jewish Surnames of North Africa] both bring the etymology of the surname and also the biographies of the famous Hatchuels among whom is the 14 years old girl Solica Hatchuel. In 1834 the Sultan of Morocco ordered beautiful Solica Hatchuel's execution in the public square of Fez for rejecting the prince of Morocco's offer of marriage and refusing to be converted to Islam. For the full story put her name on google search engine. Shalom, Mathilde Tagger Jerusalem |

I am excited to advise you that a few weeks ago I uploaded close to 7000
names into the FTJP. I would say that 85% of them are definite family members; the remainder are families I have done extensive research on and that I strongly believe are connected to my family. The following are just some of the surnames that are >from the Shtetl of: Fastov/Pavoloch/Belaya Tserkov. SCHNAPARSKI/SNOPARSKY/NULMAN/SHERMAN/SACHS/SALGANEK/ROSENFELD/KUPAT/BARASCH/ SOFORENKO/KOTLER/KOSTOWETSKY/COSTAWETSKY/MEDNICK/BISHKOVSKY/WINAKOR/WINOKUR/ KAGAN/COHEN/BRODY/JANKIELEWSKI/TOPOROFSKY/RABINOWITZ/GURALNIK. Many of these families ended up in Fall River, MA; Providence, RI and Philadelphia, PA after immigrating, but please don't let that stop you if you have families with these surnames >from the above mentioned Shtetl who didn't settle in Fall River, Providence or Philadelphia. Or if you have families >from those Shtetl who ended up in Providence or Fall River whose names aren't mentioned, please take a peek and see if there might be updates for them. I am researching the following surnames >from the vicinity of Zinkov: SILVERMAN/ZILBERMAN/APPLEBAUM/APFELBAUM/GREENBERG/PLOTKE/PLOTKER And for something really obscure, if anyone if familiar with a Rabbi Mordechai >from the area of Zinkov, probably born about 1800 and possibly the father of Ze'ev Wolf. Not much to go on, but it's all I've got!! My research number is 2088; I hope that you will search through the FTJP and contact me if you see something that you believe is related to your family. And remember, there are many other names besides the ones I listed. All the best, Linda Silverman Shefler Cary, NC linda.shefler@... |

Dear One and All:
As other people have mentioned in the recent past. There is a radio program here in Israel that helps people reunite with lost family and friends. Today a mother spoke. She is an Israeli who lives in NY (Queens). She came to Israel to look for her son. She is not sure if he is indeed in Israel or not. It seems that they had an argument and soon there after the son broke off all contact with his mother. If anyone knows of Eric Yitzchak COHEN age 27 , >from Main St. Queens; NY. Please ask him to contact his mother or his sister. All the best, Jay Lenefsky -Israel |

I'm researching the RABINOWITZ/VICH family >from Chopovichi, a bit
west of Malyn and east of Korosten. It used to be in the Radomyshl district of the Kiev gubernia, but now it's in the Zhitomir oblast. Some family members also used the last name RUBIN. My great-grandfather Herschel married his first cousin Hinda. (I'm spelling the names as my aunt does.) Herschel's mother's name was Anna, Hinda's mother's name was Fagle. I don't know their last names. Eight children survived to adulthood. Six of them emigrated during the years after 1917. Abraham, Hyman, Anna (my grandmother) and Itzhak were able to get into the States. I know that Anna and Itzhak emigrated together, but I *think* Abraham and/or Hyman did so earlier, either together or separately. Sarah and Brandel were not able to get into the States due to quotas and went to Argentina instead. Joseph and Buzek did not emigrate and are believed to have been killed during WWII. I am searching for a GOMPATZ girl who married into my Toudup/Young family
between 1750 and 1820. The family lived in the East End of London and around Romford, Lambourne and Chigwell Essex. Apparently someone in my family married the daughter of a French Jewish sea captain; the name Gompatz appears as a middle name for family members born at Lambourne Essex between 1830 and 1850. Hi to all of you
I decided to give up. It is now more than fifteen years that I am looking for my grandfather's daughter Dvora GLASER but with no response. It is now my last try and here are the details: My grandfather Chaim GLASER lived in Przemysl before the second world war. He had a daughter called Dvora (Dora or Dova), who was born in 1927. The last time my family heard >from them was in 1939. Chaim Glaser was married to my grandmother Helena-Chaya in Vienna. In the early twenties he got divorced, left Vienna and moved to Przemysl (Poland). He got married a second time in the year 1926 to Rachella STOLZBERG and had this one daughter. In 1939 he was about 43 years old and she was 12 years old. In case any one of the readers can help me finding what happened to them please be so kind to inform me to your knowledge. The information in "Yad Vashem" is just a guess and not based on any information. meir1935@... Arieh Mayer Haifa, Israel [Street address and telephone numbers deleted by Moderator.] |
