JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team
Lance Ackerfeld <lance.ackerfeld@...>

I am researching William Coleman and so far have his marriage license which states he is >from Novenlase (written as one word) in what was then Russia, reportedly Kiev Gubernia. He was born around 1888.
I am unable to locate a village/town even close to that spelling. Any suggestions? Also, I cannot find his immigration papers. I know he changed his name at some point, but don't know what a Russian version might have been. His son thinks it might have been Kahlman, but is very unsure. Any suggestions on that end? Anthony John Harbottle
Shalom Alekhem
My name is Ramon Lance Pilkington and I am writing to you to ask for help in tracking down information about my Great Grandmother Nora Elizabeth Hassell(Hassel or Hasel). It is said in the family that she had Jewish ancestry. She was born either in 1879 or 1880 and either came >from the UK or Germany or Poland. It is believed she came to New Zealand between 1881 to 1900 and married a Samuel Smith in 1901 at Levin New Zealand. I am finding it very hard to get any information on her to where she was born and where she came from. I hope you can help as not only will it be beneficial to the family, but another part of the jigsaw will be put in place. I hope you can help? Shalom Ramon Lance Pilkington. New Zealand

The GRINBERG-MOSKOWITZ-KELLER Connection
#unitedkingdom
Jeni ArmandezZiara <jeni.armandez@...>
Hello again Fellow Genners! I am elated to be able to say that after a decade
of looking for clues, my great-grandmother's name was Hana GRINBERG. Now I need help dotting my i's and crossing my t's. GGM: Hana GRINBERG (born in Botosani, Romania) GGF: Harris MOSKOWITZ (born in Pale Settlement?) GM: Rebecca KELLER (nee MOSKOWITZ) (born in Botosani, Romania) GA: Brina or Brana LAWRENCE (nee MOSKOWITZ) (born in Botosani, Romania) GA: Renee (or Lya Ratza) MOSKOWITZ (born in Botosani, Romania) Hana and Harris most likely had a religious ceremony and not a civil one. Perhaps they married when they came to the UK (Whitechapel), which I am estimating to be between 1914-1919? I am searching for the following: Where are Hana (nee GRINBERG) and Harris MOSKOWITZ buried? They lived within London for the rest of their lives. I am estimating family memory that they passed between 1951-1958? How do I find possible GRINBERG relatives in England/Romania? Years ago, my uncle received a call >from a man claiming to be my Granny's cousin and stating his last name was GRINBERG and lived in London; but uncle didn't know anything and was pre-occupied taking care of Granny (who had Parkinson's). I am searching my my mum's cousin, Jacqueline Maureen WINTER (nee LAWRENCE). Jackie was the daughter of John R. LAWRENCE and Brenda (Brina) MOSKOWITZ. We feel she might know where Hana and Harris are buried because she was born and raised in London. Mum would also love to re-connect. Last known address (many years ago) was: 14 Henrietta Gardens Bath, UK I will also post the familiar message of searching for my estranged aunt, Stella Rachel GERSON (nee KELLER) born in March 1935 in London to Theodore and Rebecca KELLER. Divorced many years ago, so not sure if GERSON would still be used. Last thought to be in Bristol or Brighton. Many thanks! PBS History Detectives on Jewish Farmer
#general
A. E. Jordan
Here's an FYI -- this week's PBS TV show called History Detectives has a
segment about a farmhouse in Connecticut. It turns out to be a Jewish farm and tells the story of the Jewish farmer of the early 20th Century in the USA. Some of you who have researched the Jewish farmers may find it a little lacking or say I knew that but I think most people will enjoy the segment. Right down to someone reading >from the Yiddish newspaper the Jewish Farmer on a story everything the Jewish farmer needs to know about his cow. There is a link to a story about the segment on their web site: http://www.pbs.org/opb/historydetectives/ There is even a transcript of the segment which some people might find helpful. The show is airing this week on various PBS stations around the USA. It is the second investigation of the show. Enjoy! Allan Jordan

Berthold BEITZ - list of Jews saved
#general
David Scriven
Dear All,
Berthold BEITZ is a German industrialist who, like Schindler, saved many Jews >from the Boryslaw/Drohobycz region by employing them in the local oil company, so preventing them >from being transported to the Belzec extermination camp. Does anyone know if there is a list of those Jews who were saved? In particular, I am interested in the photographer Gustaw RUSS. David Scriven
