JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Rieke Nash z''l
#poland
Dear friends:
It is with a heavy heart and a deep feeling of sadness and loss that I share with you the news of the passing of Rieke Nash of Sydney, Australia after a long illness. Rieke and husband Peter were regular attendees at the annual conferences and all who had the opportunity to meet her knew that they had encountered a wonderful lady in every sense. As President of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Australia and a devoted Jewish Records Indexing - Poland volunteer, Rieke was a friend, colleague and mentor to countless researchers at home and abroad. In her devotion to the role of JRI-Poland Wloclawek Archive Coordinator for more than fifteen years, we have been witness to Rieke's unique talents for collaboration and helpfulness. As a family historian, Rieke was an indefatigable researcher, traveling to archives around the world in her efforts to unravel her family's ancestry. On behalf of the executive committee and board of JRI-Poland, I extend our deepest sympathies to Rieke's husband Peter and the entire Nash family. May her memory be for a blessing and may they know no further sorrow. Stanley Diamond Executive Director, Jewish Records Indexing - Poland

Online Polish Records/Research
#general
Stevi Sanderowitz <steviraab@...>
Dear JewishGen members:
I am seeking help regarding accessing digital copies of Polish vital records online. Specifically, I am trying to locate documents on the Mertryi website using the index information I obtained on JRI-Poland (i.e., year, location, names, and Akta number). Two examples are 1) 1874 birth record of my gggm Chaje Fradel KON>KOHN; and 2) the 1873 marriage record of my ggggp Szlama>Solomon KON>KOHN and Estera KALISKA. #1 is listed as Akta 66 (Lask, Piotrkow) and #2 is listed as Akta 5 (Pabianece). Here is the potentially corresponding document I located - http://metryki.genealodzy.pl/metryka.php?ar=3&zs=1552d&sy=1874&kt=1&plik=064-069.jpg#zoom=1&x=247&y=1337 ( MOD: http://tinyurl.com/nhvant4 ) I am unsure if I located the correct documents and would be grateful for some direction or input >from fellow researchers. Beginning of modern vital registers in modern Hessen [Hessen historical geography]
#germany
Gerhard Buck <buckidstein@...>
Nearly a month ago, there was an exchange of e-mails about the beginning
of the modern Standesamtsregister (vital registers) in the territories that now form the Federal State of Hessen. I asked the new archive (Personenstandsarchiv in Neustadt near Marburg), that collects, digitizes and publishes the registers, for help. They told me that in the former state of Hessen-Darmstadt these books start on January 1, 1876 and in the former Prussian district of Hessen-Kassel on October 1, 1874. >from my own work I know that in Nassau, the second part of the Prussian province of Hessen-Nassau, the same date is true. Today is the 70^th birthday of the Federal State of Hessen. It was founded by the Americans on September 19, 1945 by uniting the Prussian province of Hessen-Nassau (without a smaller part of Nassau east of the Rhine) and the state of Hessen (capital Darmstadt; without its territories west of the Rhine). I know that you may despair, when you read this. But these changes are the daily bread of regional historians. Gerhard Buck, Idstein, Germanybuckidstein@t-online.de

German SIG #Germany Beginning of modern vital registers in modern Hessen [Hessen historical geography]

Abraham's wife and 3 more children arrived on Nov. 11, 1902. Ancestry.com had them listed under the name of Milek rather than Milch. They all have European names, so who knows what they were called in America (Nethe, Lejsche, Lieb and Fronte). > Per Gesher Galicia Town Locator and JewishGen Gazetteer, Hruszow in Drohobycz district is located at 4928/2336 and is 9.2 miles NNE of Drohobycz. Hruszow in Jaworow district and Wielkie Oczy Jewish district is located at 5005/2319 and is 10.8 miles NNW of Jaworow. Neither Hruszow had a significant Jewish community. After an extensive search in Ancestry with no luck tracing any of this family either, I tried searching JRI-Poland for surnames phonetically like MILCH and MILEH. < http://jri-poland.org/jriplweb.htm > BINGO! JRI-Poland has indexed three birth records in Wielkie Oczy PSA located in Fond 1729 of Przemysl Archive with no link to online images. - Moses MILCH/ADLER born 1883 (akta 60 sygnatura 2) was born to Abraham Joel MILCH and Neche ADLER of Hruszow. - Freide Rechel MILCH/ADLER born 1900 (akta 33 sygnatura 1) was born to Abraham MILCH and Neche ADLER of Hruszow. - Chajm Ber MILEH/ADLER was born 1882 (akta 26 sygnatura 2) to Abraham Moses MILEH and Neche ADLER of Hruszow. Based on Galician Jewish families using both parents' surnames (official and unofficial), perhaps the family changed their name to ADLER in the USA. The double given names in the index provide additional clues. Good luck! Bette Stoop Mas USA

Thanks to everybody that replied to my email request! As usual, people
were very helpful, and once again I found flaws in my method of searching. What I've learned is that everybody needs to do the same search, on both ancestry.com and familysearch.org . For example, I had tried searching for the town name of Hruszow, and people living in Massachusetts. That town name was on a WWI draft card for one of the family members that I was looking for. However, only Familysearch.org had transcribed the town name and put it in their database. Ancestry.com did not! Also, one person did find Abraham Milch listed as a father in Hruszow birth records, in the JRI database. I could swear that I had searched that database without finding him. I must have had snow blindness. More likely, I was getting fatigued at that point. Very much appreciated to all who responded. Mark London Natick, MA
