New book published: OUR LITVAK INHERITANCE (South Africa) #southafrica

Roy Ogus

David Sandler has published a new book, "Our Litvak Inheritance", the first book in the series titled "Our Litvak and South African Jewish Inheritance".

The book covers the history, life, and times of South African Jews whose families orignated in Lithuania.

Section 1 of the book commences with a timeline of Jewish history, leading to a detailed history of the Jewish settlement of Keidan and of Lithuania in general. It reports on the migration of the Jews >from the east to the west and discusses the origins, philosophies, and values of South African Litvak Jews.

Section 2 describes the horrors of World War I and its aftermath through reports in the foreign press and >from the American Joint Distribution Committee (JDC). The section also covers the displacement of Jews >from Lithuania and Latvia in 1915.

The third section recounts life in the shtetl through family histories and photographs, as well as articles and photographs >from the books, "Yizkor book of Rakishok and Environs", and the Keidan Yizkor book.

The fourth section tells of the massacre of the Jews during the second half of 1941. Also included is the Jager Report documenting the murder of the Jews in 21 Lithuanian towns.

The fifth section consists of reports of visits back to Lithuania after Lithuanian independence in 1990.

Also included is a history of Latvia, Riga, and Libau, as well as visits to these areas after independence.

The sixth section discusses the reasons for immigration, the problems encountered along the way, and why Lithuanian Jews chose to emigrate to South Africa.

Also included in the book are memories of the early immigration to South Africa.

Please contact David Sandler at <sedsand@iinet.net.au> for further information about the book, or to obtain a copy. Proceeds >from the sale of these books will be given to the Arcadia Jewish Orphanage (in South Africa), the Oranjia Jewish Child and Youth Care Center (in South Africa), and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC).

Thanks.

question about hiring a researcher in Sophia, Bulgaria #sephardic

Steve Taubman <taubman@...>

I am considering hiring a researcher to help me research my ancestors
(and hopefully find vital records, burial records, etc.) who lived in
Sophia, Bulgaria in the mid 19th century into the early 20th century.
Could anyone provide any recommendations on researchers in Sophia? I
have hired researchers previously (Ukraine and Romania), but I am at a
bit of a loss how to find someone in Bulgaria. I have checked JewishGen
and there does not appear to be any researcher listed for Bulgaria.

Thank you,

Steve Taubman

I've posted a vital record in Polish for which I need a translation.
It is on ViewMate at the following address ...
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM45618
and also VM45619-VM456622. All are >from vital records in
Szczucin and are parts of marriages or other records.

There are married names of numerous Gries girls and I have
trouble making out the men's surnames, and therefore this will
help me possibly find their names in Shoah databases, or
elsewhere.

Please respond via the form provided in the ViewMate application.

Thank you very much.

Stephen Denker wrote "But apparently according to his naturalization
documents his 55 year-old mother went elsewhere for his birth -
perhaps because there had been a cholera pandemic in Galicia for
several years before my grandfather was born in 1870."

It seems like a common practice. My great grandmother lived in
Kolomea (now Kolomyya). On the Kolomyya birth records, which are
plentiful, they list her home town as Monastryska with each birth. For
one child, it's listed as Buczacz (now Buchach). This is >from 1888-1902.
I think that's where her parents lived. Since she had a midwife for all of
her children's births, my question is, did these midwives deliver at
home or at a hospital? Almost every birth certificate in JewishGen lists
a midwife on the original birth document.
