Susskind is a kinnui for Alexander.

Actually, Susskind is found to be a kinnui for a number of names in
our traditional literature, such as: Shnei'or, Mordechai, Yekusiel,
Yerachmiel, Yisroel, Simcha. However, it probably is most common with
Aleksander, because of the common latter Hebrew consonants of 'snd'.

Re: Need help locating a Birth certificate #germany

Jan Bousse <janbousse@...>

I looked at the Antwerp immigration records, he is not listed. He must have
come to Antwerpen only to board the Red StarLine vessel Pennland. There
should be passenger records at the Ellis Island site. Robert writes that his
father was born in Frankfurt but does not say or does not know if it is
Frankfurt Main or Frankfurt Oder. The civil records at his exact birth place
should have his birth certificate.

I just looked at Ellis Island, his arrival is listed there. I could not view
the details, it's a long time since I used the site and the terms are
changed. Someone more knowlegeable should find more. I did my best.

As your father was not born in Belgium, there possibly is a Belgian
police file on him. You could enquire at the Belgian National Archives
archives.generales@arch.be for this file.

This will not provide you with the birth Certificate or passport
that you seek, but will have interesting information in it.
The file on my father was indeed interesting.

does not. The book focuses on exactly what its title states, namely Latvia =

Hope that helps.

Viewmate: Can you identify this town? #general

Laurie Sosna

Hello,

I located the Canada naturalization papers for an ancestor, Nussen
Goldblum, who immigrated to Montreal in 1906.

The handwritten document looks like he is >from Ostrofstz, Raowisli,
Russia. Nussen did not sign the forms, only made an X, so I believe
the clerk filled it out >from what Nussen said.

The previous information that I have is that the Goldblums are from
Poland. Given that the borders changed, by the time he filled out the
papers, it was Russia.

I tried to find the town using the JewishGen tool, but it doesn't seem
like the results are a close enough match. I don't have a lot of
experience with finding town names, I thought maybe some you might be
able to help.

Is Naftali often a Hebrew rendition to the Yiddish Hersh? #general

Avraham Y. Kahana

In Pinchas Hersh KANO'z grave, I found, when expecting Pinchas Tzvi,
Pinchas Naftali instead.

I wonder if rendering Naftali for Hersh is a common "mistake" (I
assume the correct is Tzvi) ?

Thanks in advance,

Jeffrey,

The Polish name of this small village is Liskowate. To pinpoint the
location, go to the JewishGen Gazetteer at
https://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/LocTown.asp, and enter
Liskowate, Poland. You will see that place is located at 4931 2237 at
Poland's SE corner, directly on the Ukrainian border.

The earliest information about the village says that in the year 1880
the place had 1,088 Ukrainian residents; no data on Jewish residents
with the exception of the information that a homestead had 5
residents.

During the 1900 Austrian census, 1,399 residents of Liskowate were
registered, amongst them 61 Jewish souls. In addition, as already
listed previously, 4 Jewish residents were identified as part of a
homestead.

In 1921, during the first post-WWI Poland independent census,
Liskowate's total residency number was 1,541 folks, including 67 Jews.

You can review names of Liskowate business people registered during
the 1921 census:

http://data.jewishgen.org/jri-pl/1929/loadtop.htm?0682

There appear to be listed such Jewish names as GROSSINGER,
SZAINER and SOMMERS.

Currently, the village population is very small; the latest census
quotes 210 residents.

Hi there,
I once inquired about how do I obtain the mentioned JPG images in Lodz

Someone told me to contact a lady that used to work there, named
