EDELMAN, UDELSMANN, KRINITZ, ZIERLER -- in or near Peczenizyn or
Ottiniya, Galicia

My grandmother Ida Gussie (Gitel) EDELMAN (1893-1988) told me in 1984
that she grew up in Ottiniya, her mother was Leah Ruchel EDELMAN
(UDELSMANN) (1860-1899) who had siblings Ben and Avram, and that her
father was Feibel/Favel KRINITZ, who was >from "Pichanizhna" (no doubt
what is now Peczenizyn). She also said that her mother's mother was
"Chaya ZIERLER."

Gussie travelled to the US in 1908 (age 15), and was listed on the
passenger manifest as "Gitel Edelman", which also named her father as
"Feibel Edelman," and she was signed for by her uncle Harry Edelman
c/o Abel/Avram Edelman of Passaic.

Gussie had several siblings. One of them, now known as Harry Edelman
(1887-1955), told his family that he had been "Aaron Krinitz" until he
arrived at Ellis Island; when they asked him his name, he thought they
were asking his sponsor's name, and he said "Harry Edelman" so that
became his American name. This sponsor was apparently a cousin who had
a successful bakery (Edelman's Bakery) in Passaic, NJ and had acted as
sponsor for many of the cousins.

I can't trace anything about Feibel Krinitz or Chaya Zierler, nor find how
Krinitz and Edelman (or Udelsmann) are related other than by Leia Ruchel's
marriage to Feibel Krinitz. Any help?

Many thanks

Looking for distant cousin, Michelle MASSIE-REILLY about 1955 most likely in the

Phone numbers for such a name in the Chicago area all have recording "not in use".

Any help in contacting her will be appreciated.

Looking for photo of 336 E Houston St. NYC #general

Wendy Griswold

Hi, cousins.

Just wondering if anyone has an idea of how I could get a photo of the
building that used to be at 336 E. Houston St. in NYC. It was torn
down before the tax photos were taken, unfortunately. There was a
jeweler, I believe by the name of Alter Gottlieb, who had a store in
that building. My grandparents lived there around the turn of the
century, 3 of their children were born there, it was the first stop
for many of the family members who came later. You know the song. It
would make a beautiful addition to the family history I'm trying to
pull together.

Thanks for any thoughts,

Wendy Griswold

Following up on Hamburg cemetery record abbreviations #germany

Jeffrey Herrmann

Many thanks to those who provided translations of the abbreviations in
an English-language transcription of a Hamburg cemetery record. One
abbreviation raises a further interesting question.

The consensus is that " PvM " stands for "Parnas v Manhig " (or similar
spellings), which translates to Community leader.

The interesting question is: Beyond the literal dictionary definition
of those words, what did it mean in the eighteenth and early
nineteenth century Hamburg Jewish community when a man came to be
known as Parnas v Manhig?

Any thoughts on this question would be greatly appreciated.
