I am aware that there is an 1848 census of Hungary. I am also aware that
there is an 1869 census of Hungary. Does anyone know if there are any other
censi??(censuses) taken between 1869 and World War I. I am most interested
in
Zemplen County. Wayne Roth, Brooklyn, New York >>

I too, would be interested in the above information. Especially Zemplen.

Lajos--> Ludwig #hungary

My father was born in Zala County in 1891. I have his birth certificate;
all in Hungarian. His given name was Lajos.
When he moved to Vienna at age 16, he changed his name to Ludwig.
BTW, when he came to the U.S. in 1911, he changed it again, to Louis.

My ggm had a brother Lajos, whom my father was named for.
LDS shows a birth registry for Ludwig. I don't believe
that Lajos is a nickname, so all I can assume is that he
changed his name, perhaps preferring something Hungarian
to something Germanic. Any thoughts on this phenomenon.
He was born in Kunszentmiklos in the 1870's.

LITWIN, Rogachev #belarus

My grandmother, Odel, came >from Rogachev, Mogilev and emigrated to Winnipeg
in 1912. Her married name was Chasanova (hence Hasinoff, my family name)
and her maiden name was LITWIN. She was the daughter of Chaim David or
David Chaim (not sure which). She met and married my grandfather, Samuel
and apparently moved to Chichersk where both my father and uncle were born.
My grandfather died in 1912 (of pneumonia). The family was in the fur
business. Other than that we do not have very much information about
her past. What do you know about Rogachev? How large a town was it? What
did people do there?

Explanation of some very odd text written on the passenger- list I received. #hungary

Dennis Baer <dbaer@...>

Hello

After having this passenger list for about a week I found that the extra
text written between the lines looked very odd to me and looks like some
naturalization information. At first it looked like some dates associated
with microfilming by the government but not so.

The passenger list comes >from June 24, 1907 and for 3 of the 6 names of my
family I see some writing in a different script handwriting above the line
written in 1907.

Just above the information for my great uncle Abram shows the numbers

2-205012 1/19/32 Recd. 5/14/37

Just above the information for my great aunt Marian shows the numbers

2-336748 5/8/34 Recd. 3/9/39

and just above the information for my grandfather Mendel it shows the number

2-19831

ok the passenger list I got >from a microfilm copy sent to me by a company I
hired to get the passenger list but the number 2-205012 just happens to
coincidently match the number of the certificate of arrival that I got
independently >from NY NARA with the declaration of intent and the petition
for naturalization. the 1/19/32 matches the date on that declaration of
intent! the 5/14/37 misses the actual date stamped on the certificate of
arrival by 4 days. The date stamped does not appear the date of arrival in
the US of June 24, 1907 but the date that the certificate got stamped and
certified by the Dept of Labor but has the date June 24, 1907 certified as
the date of arrival of the SS Livonia. Who wrote these numbers >from the
1930's about my great uncle's naturalization on a passenger list copy from
1907? Who wote the numbers for my great aunt and my grandfather and why did
my grandfather only get what appears the certificate of arrival number but
no dates after that?

Why does my grandfather Mendel have just a number 2-19831 and no dates
associated with it? Also for my grandfather note the 5 digit number after
the 2- whereas the others have 6 digits. Other than the text of these 3 just
above their original record one other unrelated person has this triplet of a
certificate number and 2 dates. no others have these triplets.

Geeeeesh.

Thank you.

Ok Friends, my turn.
My Grand Mother was Lessie BOTWINNIK and came >from Minsk to Montreal
sometime between 1903-1908. She had three sisters: Alice, Rivka, Bertha.
The only thing I know for sure is that she graduated Dentistry at he

Certificate. According to our family legend her Father was a teacher in
Minsk and they came >from a simple family. Other people tell me that if
she made it to the Imperial University she must have had more than just
a "simple" background. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Re: GELFAND - Ihumen & Vitebsk #belarus

There are no GELFAND's in my family tree, but there any lots of them
living in Montreal, Canada. Some belong to the Shaare HaShomayim
Synagogue in Westmount (suburb). Used to go to school with Brahm. Lost
touch years ago. Matter of fact there are also some GELFAND Lawyers in
Montreal - get a hold of a "Blue Book" at any BIG Law Office and you'll
probably find them in the listings for Montreal and Toronto.
Good Luck
