Raciaz Vital Records #general

Herbert Gursky

Another microfilm of vital records >from Raciaz is now available on the
Jewish Records Indexing of Poland web site. Although the film covers the
years 1857-1865, through an oversight records >from 1864 and 1865 are
missing. I hope to have this corrected in the near future.

My thanks to Ben and Rebecca Gerber for their help with this film. There
are still two more films >from Raciaz to be reviewed and transliterated.
More volunteers are needed to complete this work!

Researching MALAQUIAS Family surname #general

hazmat@...

Hello!

I am researching the MALAQUIAS surname/ancestry and would appreciate any
assistance that might be out there!

In particular, I am looking for possible connections to my Great
Grandparents Remigio Malaquias and Anna Joseph Roda. Anna Roda was from
or near Figueira da Foz. Her family may have operated a store there.
There is possibly some connection to Cova da Gala or Gala. A child of
theirs, Louis, died before they came to the U.S.

Remigio was a fisherman, possibly >from Lisbon, or may have also been
from near Figueira da Foz. May have come to the US directly >from having
been on a fishing trip to Brazil. Family settled in Provincetown,
Massachusetts on Cape Cod.

Am aware of the probable Jewish origins. Also, have heard stories about
a clown troupe traveling through europe of the name MALAQUIAS.

Any stories about the name or information regarding possible ancestors
would be most appreciated! Please respond to me off list!

Thanks.

tombstone inscription for David GOLDSMITH #general

Joyce Peck <Joycekp@...>

While visiting Beth Israel Cemetery in West Springfield, Mass., a
gravestone inscription caught my eye. It's sad. Perhaps it will mean
something to someone. There are Goldsmith's in my family but I don't
know yet if this one is connected to me.

About DE GEBHARD and QUILTER #general

Valerie Langfield <adm@...>

I am researching the English composer Roger Quilter (1877-1953).

In the 1930s, he helped an Austrian Jewish scientist, Dr Rudolf Stern,
and his family, get out of Vienna; I don't know by what means. I am told
that he was put on a Nazi blacklist for doing so, and for helping other
Jews to get out (though exactly _how_ he helped them, I cannot find out;
nor can I find out who else he helped). They came to London, where he
supported them financially for some time.

Dr Stern had a daughter, Harriet, who married the Count de Gebhard. They
had two sons, one of whom was called Roger, after Quilter. I am told
that eventually they settled in France, although for some intervening
time, I believe they lived somewhere in the far East.

I cannot trace them in France, having searched the nobility archives,
and having received extremely friendly help >from the Association
d'Entraide de la Noblesse Francaise. Nor are they in the phonebook!

I have absolutely no idea what happened to them, but I am very anxious
to trace them, since - assuming Roger de Gebhard is still alive (his
mother is not) - they may have invaluable information that they may be
willing to share, including knowledge of other Jews that he helped.

A remote chance - but can anyone help, please?

Hello Ley & all

your posting:

"Dr izidor Goldberg analyzed, dissected and organized the JEWISH data
in an article published in a Zemplen periodical called ''Adalekok
Zemplen Megye Tortenetehez'', which is organized in 18 volumes and it
can be found at Columbia U in NYC.
The data in the census includes 3200 names of head of households or
widows, by location. No family members, wives or occupation(except
professionals-- very few). >
I have seen this article and it says that the additional information was
preserved for the HEGYALJA district of Zemplen county. It points out the
exact location of this material in the Zemplen archives. I am trying to
get some input >from the archivist there, Dr HOGYE, so far no answer. I am
very interested myself.
