RUSSIAN/BELARUSIAN BORDERS #belarus

David Goldman <davic@...>

Hi BelarusSigers! This is my first post here. Some of my relatives were
Lubavitchers in a couple of border towns along the Belarus/Russia border of
today. Some were Shapiros in SURAZH, on the current Russia side, while
others were KABAKOVS in a town called Kanichi, in the Kostjacovici
district, a few miles inside Belarus. Where would genealogy-related records
for these places be? Belarus or Russia? Minsk or Bryansk? I have even been
told that Surazh records can also be in CHERNIGOV, UKRAINE. Any thoughts?

Either these were errors of the census taker, or somebody was pulling
someone's leg. Can anybody shed some light on this?"

I too received information >from Vlad Soshnikov at RAGAS which gave two
dates of birth (1848-1853) for a relative of mine >from Surazh, Belarus.
Vlad explains it like this:

"Archival record shows very interesting case, when age of person was
determined by special commission. In the XIX century Jews were extremely
mobile and to refuse the military obligations they very often changed their
real age. According to documents at first they were very young, then after
some time they were very old to carry on military obligations. For this
purpose the special commissions were established, which determined the real
age of persons. That is why two ages were pointed out for Izrael - by
appearance and by verdict of the special commission."

I am about to expose my ignorance about some points of geography in hopes
someone can set me straight.
My grandmother came >from a small town in the vicinity of Pinsk, the exact
spelling is not known but it is some variety of Koniche. My question is: is
this an area that I sometimes see referred to as Galicia and was this area
ever under the rule of Poland or was it always Russian territory? Any info to
clear up my confusion will be appreciated.

Is anyone interested in the small shtetl of ROZALIMAS where my
wife's grandfather, ZUSSMAN BRUDNO, was Rabbi. He died in
1923.
We went there in July and found it largely untouched. We were
shown the Rabbi's house. Most exciting of all, the wooden
synagogue still stands, though it is now used as a barn. As nearly all
the wooden synagogues have been destroyed (and according to our
guide, CHAIM BARGMAN, the existence of this one has not been
recorded) it was quite a find.
