Perhaps, a wiser path is to start cataloging the easy to obtain
data, for example, that in the Yizkor books and validated transit
lists in the various Holocaust museums.

UGY: Please, visit the H-SIG homepage! You will find a preliminary
bibliography of Yizkor books and other relevant works.

The search for additional
and corroborating sources can continue in parallel. Inevitably, the
process will turn up duplicate entries and these wil have to be
resolved. That's independent of the eventual approach taken by the
project.

UGY: The more data we have, the less is the chance for duplication!

What if the project only finds fifty percent of the names? That
would be a blessing because the memory of fifty percent would be
preserved. If the project only gets seventy-five percent, that would
be a bigger blessing, still. Conversely, if the project never gets
started because of arguments perfection, then no names get
remembered and the Third Reich won.

Regards,

Gyuri

Hi H-SIGGERS,
Let me add my enthusiasm about the JRI-Poland project and the Polish State
Archives (PSA) project. A JRI- Hungary project would be great. My recent
success with JRI-Poland revealed several direct ancestors that I could not
find on the LDS films of Przasnysz, a town in Poland. These records were
indexed and available through the database on JRI-Poland and the form that one
completes and sends $10 for a single record to the Polish State Archives is at
http://www.jewishgen.org/jri-pl/psa/orderfm.htm

This is the best $ "deal " I have experienced so far with Poland. It would be
wonderful if we had a similar negotiation with Hungary, because I just spent
$50 for a birth record that was searched by the Somogy Leveltar, rather a
steep price.

I would not want to defocus >from Gy. Ujlaki's project for a DB to honor
Hungarian Holocaust victims, but if Yad Vashem is working on a comprehensive
DB, perhaps we can focus on some other effort. I would help with Somogy megye.

Where is Tardos? #hungary

Dear H-Sigers,

I have the marriage registration of my grandmother, Hermin Fried, in

The National Archives of Slovakia (Slovensky narodny archiv) in Bratislava
has documents (Supis Zidov) of the Jewish Census of 1941 . Robert Klein of
Be'er Sheva visited the archives last July and after encountering
resistence on the part of the archivist in charge, he was able to obtain
information on some of our family members. The enumeration was conducted by
town and district and contained names, birth dates, place of birth, place
of residence, citizenship status, and for some individuals, registration
numbers and occupation. There was additional information on household
possessions and properties that Robert was not permitted to see.

I was lucky enough to visit Czechoslovakia in 1989 and 1990 on behalf of
industrialist Dr. Armand Hammer, and as such, gained special access to the
Bratislava State Archives. At leisure, I was able to sit down with the
archivist and peruse these 1941 Census records without hindrance, and even
copy ALL of the Jewish records >from our village of Certizne. If I am not
mistaken, there was a census >from another year (maybe 1929? but I am not

am in Jerusalem, so I am not sure what it was. However, one of these
documents has a signature of the head of household on the back, and in the
case of my great-grandfather, who was either too ill to sign his name or
illiterate, his thumb print appears instead....very neat indeed.

Additionally, during that trip, I was able to gain access (with a little
force and massive use of Dr. Hammer's name and prestige) enter the Hall of
Land Ownership in Humenne and get a copy of the deed to my
great-grandfather's property in Certizne. I never tried to claim it back
because I presume that it has little or no value, and the cost for the
legal work, taxes, upkeep, etc. didn't seem to make sense.

Best wishes,

There is a great explanation about the War as well as the surname

A List of bad e-mail addresses #general

Steven Chall <steven.chall@...>

The following list contains data provided by visitors to the JewishGen web
site who have signed our Guest Book with e-mail addresses that bounced. I
am posting this as an advisory that if anyone sends a message asking for a
private response without providing a valid and *reachable* e-mail address,
it is obviously futile. Each "error message" as shown was provided by the
system.

If you see your name on this list, be aware that I tried to contact you and
provide some "star-up" tips for using our databases.

I have also observed that a significant number of the Israeli error messages
indicate unknown *host* as opposed to unknown *user*. If anyone recognizes
the appropriate host name for any of these, I would appreciate receiving an
e-mail so I can try again to contact these newcomers to our site.
