Searching: GOLDENBERG/GOLDBERG/BLAIR #general

Colin Easdon <Easdon.Ellis@...>

Dear list
Im looking for any information on my grandmother called Aida
GOLDENBERG and my grandfather John BLAIR. They were married in Cairo
(Egypt) in the year 1923 at the British consulate.
John BLAIR was at the time serving in the r.a.f. as a telephonist. I know
Aidas father attended the wedding, his name is Israel GOLDENBERG he was
dentist in Cairo. As far as I am aware he originated >from Russia, as on
Aidas and Johns marriage lines states she was a Russian subject. I know
John and Aida left Egypt and moved to Scotland on or around 1924. They
then moved to a town called Hendon in London , I know they had two
children called Edith and Margaret, I also know that Aida and the children
stayed in France for about two years on or around 1927. Aida had a sister
in France whose name I do not know, or will never find out, I know that
Edith and Margaret returned to Scotland without there mother, Aida
remained in France and she may have re-married a Frenchman in the year
1930, I have looked in many books and web sites named by your good selfs
and I have not come up with a trace of anything about my Grandmother and
what happened to her. Thank you for any help >from anyone.

As someone on this list (Linda Cohen?) pointed out, it is possible
that jewish records are mixed in with church records. As I understand
it depending upon the size of the town, or how organized they were,
jews may not have had their own registrar. So birth registrations may
have been done by the local parish.
Dear Chaim,

Have you ever actually seen a parish birth registration with Jewish names in
it? I mean Jews, and not baptized Jews? Well, I have never seen it, and
frankly, I can not imagine the reason why a priest or minister would record
a Jews, or anybody outside his fold.

I remember, that there was a dicussion on this topic before, but there was
no general agreement on the point. If anyone has new arguments or facts to
add, I am quite curious to learn.

For those interested in this city, go to http://www.kosice.sk it is the
home page which has many links for the city. Of particular interest will be
the cultural links as they connect up to many pictures of this very beautiful
city. I was able to download a lot of pictures, including one on the
synagogue, and make an album as a gift for my mom, who always wanted to see
her mother's birthplace.

This home page, under what's new, will also link you to the Jewish cemetary
lists. It's a very interesting and well done site that keeps adding things so
I check it regularly.

Re: Jewish Brigade #general

Stephen G. Esrati <stevsta@...>

I saw this film when it showed in February at the Palm Springs
International Film Festival and commend it to anyone who has an interest in
the history of our times, although I saw precious little in the movie that
is pertinent to genealogical research.
A large part of The Tenth Prayer, my still unpublished new novel, deals
with aspects of the Jewish Brigade in Italy, including the discovery of an
Italian town, Sannicandro, that converted itself to Judaism and was not
recognized as Jewish by the rabbinate. The Jews of Sannicandro eventually
migrated to Israel, where they were given a village of their own. You can
find a short description of this testing of halacha in the Jewish
Encyclopedia.
My book also deals with the wholesale, planned, desertion by members of the
brigade so they could set up make-believe British military formations that
were actively engaged in illegal immigration of Jews to what was then
called Palestine. While this aspect is mentioned in the movie, it is toned
down.
The film does mention, again toned down, the formation by members of the
brigade of Din, the organization of avengers that pursued German war
criminals after the war. That aspect is better covered in my first novel,
Comrades, Avenge Us, which was published in 1996.
Finally, what I found most shocking was that the British, eager to get the
Jews away >from Italian ports, shipped the entire brigade to Holland in
sealed boxcars. I need not remind anyone what it must have been like for
Jews to be riding around all over Germany in sealed boxcars in 1946!
