The Belarus SIG has had some success with the NY public library with these
sources.

It would be worthwhile to find out if they have these records on microfilm.
If not, they might be pursuaded to purchase them were the case made that
there was significant interest...
I haven't been following this thread much, but if someone can tell me what
we're looking for here, I would gladly swing by the NY Pub Library and see
what they have. I work 8 blocks >from there...

Alf.

Jankel SALATA came >from Kiev to London in 1905 and married Meta GOLDMAN in

brother Boris may have gone to New York using the name ZOLOTAR.

I have no stetl for the SALATA's, only Kiev.

The GOLDMAN's may have come originally >from a stetl called
Gonyans,Bialystok,Grodno but I cannot find any reference to a place called
Gonyans anywhere.

Can anyone help with any leads for these family or place names please

Family Names FLAKS and MILMAN #ukraine

Anthony Salata <a.salata@...>

I am also researching my wife's family.

Firstly I am looking for a stetl called Radeville near Zhitomir.
I cannot find anything like except Radomysl. Is that likely to be the same
place?

I am looking for David FLAKS (Flax) , son of Isaac FLAKS who came to London
from Radesville ( or Radomysl) and married Fanny Miriam MILMAN in 1915.
Fanny Miriam MILMAN was born 10th October 1891in Dubno

Do any of these names strike a chord with anyone?

They may be written in Hungarian or German.

VM302/303 picture side of postcards are women, possibly my grandfather's
sisters
VM304 is Rudolph (Rudi) BERGSMAN in a uniform, any help with information
about the uniform would be appreciated.
VM305 is the text on the back of the Rudolph photo, I think it's written in
German

(Ukraine) Re: Poltava--khazan or xazan #ukraine

Susan <puffin77@...>

Dear Group,
I am very much a novice researcher, but am trying to track down the
various threads of my family.

I'm writing in the hope that someone can enlighten me on the meaning of
a "family tidbit". My mother's great-grandfather, of whom we know
virtually nothing, was apparently known as "the blind khazan of
Poltava". His son, variously known as Louis ABRASHKIN or Louis ABROVSKY
(in the 1920 census) came to New York in 1906, and it seems, brought his
family over in 1914 or 1916 (difficult to read the census record). His
grandson, Barney/Barnett Brofsky, was born in Poltava in 1898 or 1899,
and was naturalized in Brooklyn in 1919.

Would someone kindly advise what a "khazan" (xazan?) is? I gather it
has something to do with his synagogue, but I'd love to learn more.

Also, I'd be grateful for any suggestions as to how to determine whether
the "Poltava" he's >from refers to the Ukrainian gubernia (as I suspect)
or a town by that name. On the census form, the name "Poltava" is
written as their birthplace, then crossed out and replaced with
"Russia".

Thanks in advance!
Best wishes,
Susan (Markowitz)

I would very much appreciate it if anyone could translate for me any
information on the Jewish agricultural colony of Orekhov (Orechoff),

(St.Petersburg, 1887).

"Khaklaim Yehudiim Bearvot Russia"
(Jewish agriculturalists on the Russian Steppe, Tel Aviv 1965).
