Mofdechai Rudiner of Pinsk. After seraching several geneological
reference books I think I stumbled on the solutions to my research
problems, thanks to a reply >from a fellow genner, Itzchak Epstein.

The name Rudiner is probably an understandable mistake for RUZHINER
(daled and Zayin in hebrew script are very similiar). According to
Epstein's lead and checking other sources it seems that the relative
mentioned in my gguncle's diary is Mordechai ZACKHEIM who served as
the AB"D (chief rabbinical judge) of Pinsk during the latter decades
of the 19th cent. I understand, that he originated >from Ruzhinoi and
married the Rabbi of Pinsk, Rabbi Shmuel Avigdor TOSEFAA, and
succeeded him in his post in Pinsk, but was refered to as
R' Mordechai (of)RUZHINER.

Now to finish and put everything into place, does anyone, and I
understand that the ZACKHEIM's are a well known rabbinical family,
have the immediate genealogy of this specific Mordechai ZACKHEIM?
I've checked superficially (before having stumbled over this
mistake) Friedman's Hebrew language "Otzar Harabanim" (Which
mentions TOSEFAA but I don't remember him forwarding me to another
relative) and Rosenstein's "The Unbroken Chain" which mentions
Mordechai ZACKHEIM and his Rabbinical position in Pinsk but doesn't
lead me further.

Also, does anyone know of a familial connection between R' Mordechai
ZACKHEIM and the Gaon of Vilna or R' Chaim of Volozhin, to both of
which there are unconfirmed traditions that our family are
connected?

Again thank you Itzchak Epstein.

A few notes:

In (at least) the 19th Century -- Pinsk and Karlin, while physically
adjoined, were two separate religious communities. It is possible
that people would colloquially refer to Karlin as "Pinsk". However,
among institutionally knowledgeable people there is seldom a mistake
about the rabbinical offices.

I am not an expert but will synopsize what my undocumented distant
cousin Mordechai Nadav wrote in the Pinsk Yizkor Book (I:A 284-294).

Pinsk:
-- 1844-1858 -- Rav and ABD -- Mordechai ZAKHEIM >from Rujinoi.
His son Moshe married the daughter of the Gvir (Translate this!)
Rabbi Aharon ARKIN and was a well to do Pinsk resident. Otzar
Harabanim indicates that Moshe (5602-5663) was (>from 5647) a rabbi
in Kovel and the fil of Rabbi Yom Tov Lipman SHICK.

-- 1860-1890 -- Elazar Moshe HOROWITZ -- fil of the Torah
Temimah, R. Baruch halevi EPSTEIN; fil of R. Yehudah Hayim
SUSNITZER. No sons.

Karlin:
-- 1856-1866 - Shmuel Avigdor Tosefah. Among his children --
Yehoshua Arye Leib ABD Yanov, a daughter who married Mordechai Leib
and a daughter who married Noah Eliyahu hacohen of Minsk. I did not
notice that R. Shmuel Avigdor had a separate secular last name.

Surprisingly, Nadav does not mention who followed Tosefah as ABD
Karlin.

It seems to me that R. ZAKHEIM lived and officiated too early to
qualify as Ben-Ari's uncle's mentioned Rabbi. That is why we have
to assemble the least distorted sources as close as possible to
their context.

Nadav's Excellent monograph and footnotes should be the starting
point for research on this subject.
