Re: Yiddish Nursery Rhyme #galicia

Dear Galtizianers,
My gm, >from Krementchug, Ukraine, played a similar game.....the little
poem had four verses:......cant remember the first two, but the last were,
''Icky Picky Gramaticky, Hutz Klutz Zayitch ''(zayitch means rabbit in
Russian)......
A few weeks ago my Yiddish class saw an old classic Yiddish film at
the Walter Reade Theatre and in the movie there's a scene where a kindly
neighbor tries to help a sick child by reciting a ''spell'' over the
child...there were certain gestures that accompanied the ''spell'' and of
course the pretend spitting to each side of the child ...the rhythm of the
rhymed spell reminded me very much of my grandmother's rhyme game and made me
wonder if originally these rhyme games were a way to ward off the evil eye.

Linguistics question #lithuania

sman@...

This is a Hebrew linguistics question. In vital records, the hebrew
spelling of my Oshmiany's family is nun aleph aleph resh. In cyrillic it is Hoap. In english it is Noar.

As far as I know nun aleph aleph resh is not a word. Nun ayin resh would be but it is not spelled that way. Does anyone know why the rabbi's would have spelled it that way in Hebrew?

Thanks

Zamot appears to be the name for an area in northeastern Lithuania in
the
1800s. A search of Jewishgen Databases leads to several towns (e.g.
Jurgurg, Shat) apparently in Zamot but nothing on the boundaries of
the
area. What were the boundaries? When did it came into existence and
what
happened to it. It included at least one side of the
Nieman river. It doesnot appear on the maps I have.

The border between Lithuania and Kurland was always a subject of
disputes and disagreements. Documents for 1473, 1505, 1535, 1541, to
1545 are published K. Gadebush. Livlaendische Bibliothek nach
Alphabetischer Ordnung. Riga, 1777. Th. 1. Ab. 2 ## 71, 101, 128, 134,
138.

Documents for 1566 and 1585 are published in the same place Th. 2. Ab.
1. ## 51, 179.

These borders repeatedly changed. The Russian Imperial Government
changed borders between Kovno province and Kurljand province.

Borders changed also after the First world war.

Galvacs #hungary

David Sencer

I have just found that the birthplace of my first cousins, once removed, is
Galvacs. I have found it on the map, but have been unable to determine the
county. Would appreciate any knowledge of that village, and suggestions for
furtherance of research would be appreciated.

Regina and Seren were born in 1876 and 1884. Mother Hannah Gross Kish,
father Salamon Kish. Hannah's sister, Bertha, married Ignatz Senz(c)er and
they are my paternal grandparents. I know nothing of their Hungarian
birthplaces or marriage sites. Vague family remembrances mention Szendro,
which is close to Galvacs.
